JoAnn Kathryn Johanning, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away on April 23, 2025, at Thornecrest Retirement Community in Albert Lea, at the age of 84. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Born on January 4, 1941, in Wilmont, MN, JoAnn was the cherished daughter of the late Al and Iva (Arens) Sieve. She dedicated her life to her family and her work, leaving an everlasting mark on all who knew her. JoAnn was not only a devoted mother to her children, David (Lisa), Julie (Derek), and Sue (Ron), but also a guiding light for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, affectionately known as her darlins. Her loving home was built on a foundation of faith, family, and friends. JoAnn loved to sing, often lifting her voice joyfully in church, where her faith served as her source of strength. She firmly believed that "God will provide," a mantra that resonated deeply in her life.
For over 40 years, JoAnn thrived in her career as a Realtor. She was a hard worker; known for her tenacity and her ability to forge meaningful connections with everyone she met. JoAnn had a passion for sewing and crafts, sharing her talents with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, leaving them with cherished keepsakes of her love from “Grandma Jo”. JoAnn’s vibrant personality and courage shone through in everything she did. Her legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering strength will forever be remembered.
Those left to cherish JoAnn’s memory include her children, David (Lisa) Johanning, Julie (Derek) Sager, and Sue (Ron) Busch; grandchildren, Ashley and Emily Johanning, Jenna (Tim) Kuphal, Alyssa (Michael) Falk, Mathew Sager, Kelsey (Tyler) Riesgraf, and Natalie Busch; great-grandchildren, Kaidyn, Karson, Teddy, Brooklyn, Emerson, and Margot; brother, Gary (Joyce) Sieve; sister, Barb (Tom) Estrem; and several extended family members and friends.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Al and Iva Sieve; her sister, Carol Rupp; and her brother-in-law, William Rupp.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Wilmont, MN. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery with a luncheon to follow. Per JoAnn’s request, guests are encouraged to wear hats to her service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in JoAnn's name, may be made to St. Croix Hospice, 2580 Bridge Ave, Albert Lea, MN 56007.
