Kathryn Libby
Kathryn was born on August 13, 1928 in Charlestown, Prince Edward Island Canada, the daughter of Ernest and Lona Judson. She attended schools and secretarial school on Prince Edward Island. While in Presque Isle Maine she worked as a secretary for Maine Food Plan. On December 25th 1948 she married Chase Libby and entered the United States under the WWII War Bride Act. Kathryn then resided in Calais, Presque Isle and Brewer before settling in Portland in 1970. Kathryn and Chase wintered in Lakeland, Florida from 1977 to 2014. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of The Veterans of Foreign Wars. She collected designer plates and postage stamps. She enjoyed sewing, crochet, knitting and crossword puzzles. She is survived by a brother (Paul) in Ontario, Canada as well as a son (Brian) in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
Chase Melvin Libby 08/12/1928 to 10/06/2023
Chase was born on August 12th, 1928 in Hampden, Maine, the son of Harold and Doris Libby. He was educated in Maine schools and graduated from Calais Academy with high honors (member of National Honor Society 1946). He immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. After basic training he was he was stationed in Japan and served in the 1067th Engineer Construction Group. He was assigned to the motor pool and was later promoted to Motor Sergeant. He was discharged in November 1947 and enlisted in the Army Reserves. Chase was hired by the New England Telephone Company on January 3rd, 1948 as a line assigner. He was recalled to active duty in June of 1950 and sent to Germany with the 1st Infantry Division Artillery HQ and released from active duty in October 1951.His 37-year career with the New England Telephone Company moved him from Presque Isle to Bangor, Brunswick, and Portland. His many promotions ended as Maine Operations Manager in June of 1985. Chase joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1950 and served in many capacities which included Post Commander in Calais, District Commander while in Presque Isle and Sate Commander and National Council Member for Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont while in Portland. He served for 6 years on the Board of trustees of the Maine Veterans Homes at the time when the board authorized the expansion to Bangor, Scarborough and South Paris.
Visitation will be held from 4-6 Pm on Wednesday January 3, 2024 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Avenue in Portland.
Burial with military honors will be in the Southern Maine Veteran's Cemetery, Springvale in the spring.
