Chauncey Wallace Smith
Of Harpursville
Chauncey Wallace Smith, 89 of Harpursville, NY, passed away on September 4, 2024 after a short illness.
"Stub" is survived by Jennie Biedekapp-Smith, his "mentee" of 50 years and his spouse for 34 years. His daughters, Jacqui (Dave) Nelson of Beacon Falls, CT, Renee Zennaiter of Binghamton, NY, Gina Smith of Johnson City, NY, and son, Jeffrey (Paula) Smith of Palmyra, NY. His grandchildren, Mackenzie and Tanner Korb, Reid Nelson, Collin and Hayden Smith, and great grandson Corvin Sharpe and step grandsons Jeff and Steven Nelson and their families. His sisters, Debra (Ron) Hengst of Waynesboro, PA and Barbara (Kenneth) Martin of Gansevoort, NY and their families along with many Biedekapp in-laws and their families.
Stub was predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Sophie Smith, and Edgar and Anne Smith. And, for 60+ years, his best friend, Ward Stanton, who was his colleague and comrade in coaching, hunting, and the sharing of life's pleasures (especially a Heineken or 2!)
Stub was born on June 14, 1935, and graduated from South Kortright Central School in 1954 where he was an outstanding 3 sport athlete. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, participating in and coaching baseball and basketball on the base. This began his 45 year career in that field.
He graduated from Ithaca College on the GI Bill in 1960 with a Physical Education degree. He taught and coached in several districts with outstanding success, twice being named Coach of the Year by the local media.
Anything Stub chose to do, he did with extraordinary passion. His favored hobbies were elk, deer, and turkey hunting, and coaching even into his retirement. He also enjoyed bowling and golf and a competitive round of poker. In his leisure time, he loved riding motorcycles and traveling across the country. He and Jennie were able to enjoy full time RV living for 9 years and wintered in Texas for 17 seasons until finally settling in Tunnel, NY among friends and former students he had known for years.
He passed as he lived - a man who always did it his way.

Mr Smith was my basketball coach, driver ed teacher and I was his Baseball manager. One thing was he always demanded for everyone on the team to do there very best. His discipline was something that carries and drives me to this day. Thank you coach and RIP.
