Cherill A. Spaeth, 86, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2024 at her home in Rolling Prairie, IN., surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born January 31, 1938 in New Carlisle, Indiana, the daughter of Benjamin Houseknecht and Violet (Stoner) Houseknecht.

A lifelong resident of the area, Cherill graduated from Rolling Prairie High School and went on to get her nursing degree at St. Mary Mercy School of Nursing. Her career began as a surgical nurse at St. Anthony's in Michigan City, followed by working for Dr John Valantiejus, whose family grew to be her second family, and finally as a school nurse for LeMans Academy in Rolling Prairie. Cherill attended Rolling Prairie Christian Church and was a member of the Eastern Star, Rolling Prairie. As a child, one of Cherill's greatest joys was delivering milk with her grandfather, who owned Houseknecht Dairy. As an adult, she loved the outdoors, enjoyed swimming in her pool, tending to her beautiful flower garden and watching the many birds who flocked to her feeders. Cherill was very involved with athletics and 4-H with her children and grandchild. She adored her many dogs and cats and admired her daughter's horses. Cherill was known as a kind and gracious person who did so much for her family and friends and spent her life serving others.

On October 3, 1959, in Rolling Prairie, IN, Cherill married her true love, Donald Spaeth, who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Gina Spaeth, daughter, Lee Ann Spaeth; brother, Charles "Fred' Houseknecht.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Spaeth of Mill Creek, IN; beloved grandchild, Alex (Brianna Williams) Spaeth-Jonas of Rolling Prairie, IN; great-grandchildren Waylon & Weston Spaeth-Jonas; two sisters, Shirlene Neukam of La Porte, IN, Nancy Jorgenson of Rolling Prairie, IN; sister-in-law, Diane Houseknecht of Rolling Prairie, IN; brother, Jon (Gale) Houseknecht of Rolling Prairie, IN and various nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a viewing on Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Friday, September 6, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., with Chaplain Hector Trevino, Dunes Hospice, officiating. Cremation will take place. 

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Cherill's caregivers, Lori Long, Pam Pask, Angie Benjamin, as well as Dunes Hospice, for their kindness and extraordinary care.
