Cheryl Faye Covey, aged 66, passed away peacefully at her residence in
Odessa, Texas, on August 26, 2024. Born on July 2, 1958, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Cheryl's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and the joy found in life's simple pleasures.
Cheryl's early years in Carlsbad were filled with the warmth of family and the sounds of Elvis Presley, her favorite singer. Her passion for the King of Rock 'n' Roll was only matched by her love for John Wayne movies and the thrill of the hunt, as she would often be found tuned into the hunting channel. Cheryl's laughter and bright spirit were the heart of many family gatherings at her mother's house in Carlsbad, where she shared her love for eating, animals, and most importantly, her family.
Cheryl's selfless, loving, and gentle nature touched everyone she met. She was the kind of person who made an indelible mark on the hearts of her family and friends. Her love story with her late husband, James Ray Covey Jr., was one for the ages. She was absolutely crazy about Covey, and their love was a shining example of unwavering commitment and affection.
Cheryl is survived by a family who adored her: her mother Donna Smith; her son James Vincent (Casie) Higgs III; her daughter Sarah Marie (Alex) Stone; her brothers J.D. (Raynell) Rogers; her sisters Diane Marie (Rick) Wells, and Millie Jean (David) Jameson; her cherished grandchildren J'Anna, James IV, Kierra Higgs, Nicholas, Lindsey Marquez, and Chance Stone; and her great-grandchildren James Vincent Higgs V, and Elaya Calderon. Each of these individuals carries a part of Cheryl's spirit, her love, and her teachings with them.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her beloved husband James Ray Covey Jr.; her father Aulton Curtis Rogers; her daughter Jessica Dawn Higgs; her brothers Jimmy Lynn Wray, and Ricky Lynn Rogers; as well as her great-grandchild Annora Mendez-Higgs. Their memories are a comfort to those who continue to navigate the world without her physical presence.
Cheryl's love for her family was boundless, and she found her greatest joy in the laughter and milestones of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It was in these moments that Cheryl's heart was fullest, surrounded by the youthful energy and innocence that she cherished so deeply.
The void left by Cheryl's passing is immeasurable, yet her legacy of kindness, compassion, and unconditional love endures. She taught those around her the value of family, the beauty in gentleness, and the importance of living a life filled with love. Cheryl's memory will continue to be celebrated in the stories shared at family gatherings, the songs of Elvis Presley that will forever echo in the homes of her loved ones, and the cherished traditions she helped create.
