On March 6, 2026, Cheryl Claire Migues LeCompte, age 73, passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Though her passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of those who loved her, Cheryl's life was filled with devotion to family, faith, friendship, and a determination to embrace every day she was given.
Cheryl was born on June 2, 1952, in
New Iberia, Louisiana, the eldest daughter of the late Gerald "Jerry" Migues and Jacqueline "Jackie" Viator Migues. She spent her childhood in the home her parents built on the Loreauville Road in the oak-lined town she loved so dearly. Growing up as the oldest of three sisters, Cheryl shared a close bond with her family and carried that sense of care throughout her life.
She attended the local schools of New Iberia and graduated from New Iberia Senior High School in 1970. During her senior year, her mother enrolled her in a tax course-an experience that would unexpectedly shape Cheryl's professional life. What began as a single class became a lifelong career in tax preparation.
In June of 1972, Cheryl met Mark LeCompte of Houma, Louisiana. Their connection was immediate, and by December of that same year they were married at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in New Iberia. Their marriage of 53 years was marked by companionship, humor, and a shared love of adventure.
After briefly living in Houma, Cheryl and Mark returned to New Iberia so they could build their life close to family. Cheryl chose seasonal tax work so that she could devote most of the year to raising their son, Ryan. She worked many years for the owners of the local H&R Block office in New Iberia, Mitch Ackal and his wife, Mae Helen. When Mr. and Mrs. Ackal retired, Cheryl purchased the business and proudly continued serving the community until her own retirement.
Traveling was one of Cheryl's greatest joys. Over the years she and Mark explored much of the world together, visiting Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Scotland, and Canada. They also traveled across the United States with their son, checking off state after state on Cheryl's personal list. Montana held a special place in her heart-not only for its breathtaking beauty but because it allowed her to spend time with one of her lifelong friends, Beth Harrison.
Shortly after the passing of her mother and just before her retirement, Cheryl received a diagnosis that would test her strength in ways few people experience. At age 64 she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and was told she might only have two years left. Cheryl, however, refused to let a diagnosis define the time she had. With faith, prayer, determination, and an unwavering positive spirit, she lived more than nine additional years. Her doctors often marveled at her resilience and the strength of her will to live.
Even during difficult days, Cheryl's smile-one that seemed to reach all the way to her eyes-never faded. She loved reminiscing with her family, sharing stories, and appreciating the life she had been given. Her courage and outlook on life remain an inspiration to all who knew her. If Cheryl could leave one message behind, it would likely be this: never give up the fight for a beautiful and meaningful life.
Cheryl leaves behind the family she loved so deeply: her husband of 53 years, Mark LeCompte; her son Ryan LeCompte and his wife, Misty; her grandson Coby LeCompte and his wife, Alexa; and her granddaughter Katheryn LeCompte. She is also survived by her sisters, Gwendolyn Migues and Lyndal Boyer and her husband, Bart; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Cheryl also leaves behind her uncle, Kenward Viator; her aunts Lois Migues Hebert and Jeanette Migues Fontenot; and many cousins.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1401 Marjie Street in
New Iberia, Louisiana, on Saturday, March 21, 2026. Visitation with the immediate family will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. The memorial service will be conducted by Brother Michael Elliot, an elder of the Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. A private graveside gathering will be held at a later date in Houma, Louisiana, where Cheryl's ashes will be interred.
Honorary pallbearers will be Coby LeCompte, Eric LeCompte, Lee Prather, Corie Prather, Ian Boyer, and Jeff Hebert.
Cheryl will be remembered for her strength, her love of family, and the joy she found in life's journeys-both near and far.
