Cheryl Lou (Weiss) Mewhorter, age 78, of Palmyra, MO passed away at 6:47 am Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra, MO.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, September 26, 2025, at New Life Pentecostal Church in Hannibal, MO. Pastor Michael Niffen will officiate.
Visitation celebrating Cheryl's life will be held at 10:00 am. until the time of the service at New Life Pentecostal Church in Hannibal, MO.
The family is being served by the Smith Funeral Home & Chapel of Hannibal.
Cheryl was born on December 1, 1946, in Hannibal, MO the daughter of Gustav and Alta (Wasson) Weiss.
She was united in marriage to Murray Vincent Mewhorter in 2005 in Saverton, MO. He preceded her in death on March 10. 2025.
Survivors included two daughters, Lori Gough (Patrick) of Shelbina, MO and Gail Gough of New London, MO; son, Kenneth Epperson (Rachel) of Hannibal, MO; sister, Sharon Thomson of Kahoka, MO; eight grandchildren, David Damron (Alexis), Megan Somers (Steven), Jessica Kroeger (Thomas), Cheyenne Sutton, Jared Damron, Evan Gough (Bree Jordan), Hannah Epperson, Logan Epperson and Bryce Epperson; great-grandchildren, Oren, Elan, Brantley, Halli, Olivia, Kyle, Clara, Henley and Cooper; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Mewhorter was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Sherman and brother, Larry Weiss.
Cheryl graduated from Hannibal High School and was in the class of 1964.
Professionally Cheryl worked as a Veterinary Technician.
Cheryl was a member of New Life Pentecostal Church.
Cheryl was a vibrant and dedicated member of her community, fondly remembered for her unwavering spirit and generosity. Throughout her life, she exemplified the values of hard work and dedication, particularly noted during her active involvement with the Ralls County 4H.
Her passions were diverse and many; she had a special fondness for crafting, creating beautiful items that brought joy to her family and friends. Cheryl's love for sewing was equally notable, often resulting in cherished gifts and thoughtful creations. A true aficionado of home decor, her talents in decorating her home were admired by all, and her enthusiasm made hosting family events a joyous occasion. Cooking was another of her delights, and many will remember the delicious meals she prepared with care and love.
Cheryl had an affinity for music, particularly country tunes, which she enjoyed while surrounded by her loved ones. Family gatherings were a highlight for her, especially those that centered around attending her grandchildren's events, where her support and encouragement shone brightly.
During her time at Maple Lawn Nursing Home, Cheryl formed bonds with the staff, who not only appreciated her vibrant personality but also cherished the warmth and laughter she brought to their days. She had a way of keeping everyone on their toes, bringing a sense of liveliness and joy to those around her.
Cheryl leaves behind fond memories that will be treasured by all who knew her. Her legacy of love, creativity, and devotion will continue to inspire her family and friends for years to come.
Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandson's and the Maple Lawn staff and nurses.
Memorial contributions may be made out to NEMO Humane Society or Maple Lawn Activities Department, in care of Smith Funeral Home & Chapel.
