Chester May Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chambers Funeral Services - Matewan on Dec. 9, 2025.
Chester "Larry" May, Jr., 68, of Somerset, KY, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord, early Sunday morning, December 7, 2025, while an inpatient in the Jean Waddle Care Center of Somerset, KY.

Born September 3, 1957, in Williamson, WV, Larry was the son of the late Chester Lawrence May, Sr. and Estel Mae (Evans) May. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving stepmother, Henrietta Collins May, and his sister, Mary "Libby" Bevins Scott.

Larry was a proud member of Cornerstone Church of Hatfield Bottom, Matewan, WV, where his faith was an anchor throughout his life. He was known as a hard worker, a provider, and a man who showed his love not only in words but in everyday actions. Over the years, Larry held several positions that reflected his strong work ethic and dedication. He served as Store Manager for Quality Foods of McCarr, KY, for over six years, and later as Store Manager for Family Dollar for about five years, where he became a familiar and friendly face to many in the community. He went on to work as a loader/operator for East Anderson Hardwood of Eubank, KY, for eight years. Whether managing a store or operating heavy equipment, Larry gave his best and took pride in a job well done.

Larry's greatest joy, however, was found at home and in the hills, creeks, and quiet places he loved. He had a deep love for music and could often be found with a guitar in his hands, picking out a tune and lifting the spirits of those around him. He also enjoyed fishing, taking in the peace of the water, the company of family and friends, and the simple satisfaction of the catch. Above all, he was a devoted family man who did everything he could to take care of those he loved. Providing for his family was not just a responsibility to him; it was his calling and his pride.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Peggy May of Waynesburg, KY, who walked by his side through life's joys and challenges. He is also survived by his son, Matt Lawrence May and his wife Tori of Waynesburg, KY, who carry forward his strength, humor, and love; and his beloved grandchildren, who were the light of his later years: Auroria May of Waynesburg, KY, and Alex and Zack Adkins of Switzer, WV. Papaw Larry's stories, smiles, and gentle guidance will live on in them.

Larry is also survived by his brother, Noah May and his wife Debby of Science Hill, KY; his sisters, Linda May of Belo, WV, Teresa May of Belo, WV, and Sandra Cummins and her husband Rick of Harroldburg, KY; brothers-in-law, Kenny Hensley of Pikeville, KY, and Daniel "Big D" Hensley of Thacker, WV; and sisters-in-law, Joyce Patton and her husband John of North Carolina, and Norma Clark of North Matewan, WV. He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends who will remember his easy smile, his willingness to lend a hand, his quiet strength, and the way he could make people feel welcome and cared for. To know Larry was to know a man who loved deeply, worked honestly, and lived simply but fully.

The family will begin receiving friends on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 6 to 9 pm in the Cornerstone Church of Rt. 49 Hatfield Bottom, Matewan, WV 25678.

Honoring services will be held at the church on Friday, December 12, 2025, beginning at 11 am, with Pastor Thomas Whitt officiating. Burial will then follow in the Clark Family Cemetery of Merrimac, WV, with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
