Christina Athanasopoulos, age 72, died at her Peabody home on the 15th of December in the comforting presence of her family after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved mother of Penelope Tountas, Spiros Athanas, and John Athanasopoulos; devoted wife of George, and dear daughter of the late Spiridon Demakes and Maria (Yiannakakis) Demakes; adored Yia Yia of eight grandchildren: Spiros Athanasopoulos, Christina Tountas, George Athanas, Peter Tountas, Alexander Athanas, Katina Athanas, Tatiana Athanasopoulos, and Alexander Athanasopoulos, and proud great-grandmother of Christina Athanasopoulos. She is also survived by three brothers, George Demakes, James Demakes, Savvas Demakes and sister, Vasiliki Fatouros. Christina was born on October 4, 1939, and grew up in the village of Loganikos, outside of Sparta in Greece. In 1966, she emigrated from Greece to the United States and lived in Lynn for the next seven years before returning to Greece. In 1986, she and her family returned permanently to the U.S. making Peabody her home. A self-made entrepreneur, and successful business woman, Christina owned and operated, Chandler's Ice Cream in Peabody for fifteen years solidifying its reputation as one of the best ice cream shops on the North Shore. In her spare time, Christina enjoyed cooking, traveling, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9AM from the SOLIMINE, LANDERGAN AND RICHARDSON FUNERAL HOME, 426 Broadway (Rt 129), Lynn, followed by a service in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Lynn at 10AM. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Monday from 4-9PM. Remembrances may be made to MGH North Shore Cancer Center, 102 Endicott St. Danvers, MA 01923 or Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923 in Christina's honor.
