A CHRISTMAS STAR IS BORN: REMEMBERING CHRISTINE RENEE NELSON
Christine Renee Nelson was born to Mildred and Robert Nelson on December 25, 1963,
at Washington, DC's Freedmen's Hospital, at what is now Howard University. Our Christmas baby, "Chrissy," attended DC Public Schools including high school at H.D. Woodson in NE.
As a young girl, Chrissy loved black & white films and thought the likes of classic stars
such as Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart, and Cary Grant talented –and handsome! And if you ever had the chance to visit Chrissy at her home, if she wasn't (re)watching the finest Tyler Perry or BET programming, she was secretly being enchanted by Westerns or song & dance from the 1930s & 40s.
Several opportunities in hospitality never impeded Chrissy's most rewarding career:
adopting other mothers' little ones! Up to her last days, Chrissy loved taking care of children. As a daycare provider, mothering, spoiling, and making them her own, frequently left her (only) son inquiring: "And to whom does this one belong?!" Leave it to Christine, and her own life would have been filled with a dozen more of her own children!
A spunky, outgoing, free-spirit with a kilowatt smile, Chrissy enjoyed kicking butt in
Mow Mow, fried fish, chicken and collards, traveling to New York, Florida, New Orleans and Texas, and just having a great time. Christine leaves behind her mother Mildred, deceased stepfather James West, baby siblings Irving and Wayne Nelson, aunt and uncle Michelle and Michael, amazing brothers from the Lodge, Dutch Village and Kings Square, and the "Sandbox Sisters" –a truly long and extraordinary list of sisters who had Chrissy's back and front, and a host of nieces and nephews, godsons and goddaughters, relatives and friends, many of whom we could never all possibly name but whose presence in her life we know was enduring, supportive, and filled with grace. Christine is preceded by her father Robert Nelson, her two grandmothers; Mildred Smith and Jean Johnson, her brother Demetrius V. Nelson, Sr. and her nephews Demetrius V. Nelson, Jr. and Quanta Johnson.
Chrissy was called home to glory on March 14, 2025, at 12:21PM with loved ones by her
side, and leaves behind a world unready for her departure but at peace with the abundance she left in our hearts.
Please truly join us in celebrating the life and glorious odyssey of our friend, sister,
daughter & mom, Christine "Chrissy" Renee Nelson.
Thank you for attending and God bless.
