Christopher "Chris" Rodes Sr., 75, of Hanover, formerly of Winthrop and Hingham, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2024, surrounded by his loving family after a long illness. Born on October 13, 1948, in Malden, MA, he was the beloved son of the late Helen and Theodore Rodes.
Chris graduated from Hingham High School in 1967 and soon after joined the United States Coast Guard, serving from 1967 to 1971 aboard the USCGC Sherman. He proudly served his country during the Vietnam War in 1970.
After his honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, Chris returned to the family business, working at the New England Produce Center in Chelsea, affectionately known as "the market," for his father at G.T. Rodes and Sons. He eventually opened a retail shop, Apple a Day, in Weymouth, Massachusetts. Later, he returned to the market as a salesman for various businesses before operating his own iteration of T. Rodes and Sons in the 1990s. From 2000 until his retirement in 2023, Chris worked for Community Suffolk at the market.
Chris had a lifelong love for the ocean, enjoying swimming and boating. He also loved golfing with his children and sister, Linda, and spent as much time as possible with his beloved grandchildren. He cherished traveling to visit family and spending summers at their house on Cape Cod in Falmouth. Chris was known for his social and talkative nature, always ready with a story and eager to engage with others. He was also known for hosting his extended family for all holidays, enjoying preparing and cooking large meals, and making each gathering special.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Rodes (née Swanson); his children, Christopher Rodes and Timothy Rodes and his wife Deema Jassi; and his cherished grandchildren, Devan Rodes, Nora Rodes, Ayaan Rodes Jassi, and Aarav Rodes Jassi. He also leaves behind his siblings, Linda Brown and George Rodes, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Chris is predeceased by his parents, Helen and Theodore Rodes, and his siblings, Theodore "Ted" Rodes, Michael Rodes, and Stephen Rodes.
Visiting hours will be held at Sullivan Funeral Homes, 551 Washington St., Hanover, on Wednesday, July 10th from 4-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover St., Hanover, on Thursday at 9am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the VA Boston Healthcare System in Chris's memory at or to Old Colony Hospice.
