Christopher Thorne Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Woody Home for Services on Nov. 29, 2025.
Christopher Irving Thorne ( Sunrise December 25, 1951, Sunset November 14, 2025)
A writer, a lover of sports, a lover of music, and most of all, a lover of people and laughter.
Christopher Irving Thorne, 73, of Maplewood, NJ, died at the Daughters of Israel nursing home on November 14th, 2025. He was born in the Bronx, NY in 1951 to Eileen Watkins Thorne and Irving Thorne, who both immigrated to New York from the Caribbean with their parents and siblings.
Christopher grew up in White Plains, New York, where he graduated from Woodlands High School, in 1969 and went on to study Journalism at Bowling Green University, in Bowling Green, Ohio.. This is where Chris met "the one": Drewsilla Bostic, in 1970. They were both studying Journalism and sporting very big afros at the ti me, so naturally they had a lot of chemistry. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married on August 3, 1974 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Chris and Drewsilla started a family of their own in 1988 with the debut of their oldest son, Cristopher, followed by their next son, Desmond in 1990. They frequently encouraged their sons to love music, films, and other arts. They also passed down their love of writing to their sons.
Chris took on yet another new role in 2018 with the birth of his first grandson, Isaiah followed by Elijah in 2022. Both grandsons excelled at making Chris do one of his favorite things, which is to laugh.
Chris was passionate about his job as a sports writer at the Star Ledger, where he worked for 25 years. He covered high school, college, and professional sports with an emphasis on football, basketball, and boxing. He was the President of the Boxing Writers Association of New Jersey for several years. Prior to working with the Star Ledger, he worked for the Times Recorder, in New Philadelphia,Ohio and the Saginaw News, in Saginaw, Michigan. Totaling nearly 40 years as a professional sports writer. He often traveled for work and would have exciting stories to tell when he returned.
Chris was also an active member of St. Matthew AME Church. He participated in the Gospel Chorus, the Men's Choir, Adult Church School, and Men's Bible Study.
Chris will always be remembered for his sense of humor, silliness, his grilling skills, his loud (and good) music selections, and the way that he would tell a story. We'll always imagine hearing him laugh too hard and too loud at something, and joining in with him one more time. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.
