Chuck Hipp left this world for the next on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2024. He wanted to be buried in a coffee can but his family felt like doing better by him. So here we are. He would've laughed at that line.
Chuck was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Dec. 30, 1964 but grew up in the Ward's Corner area of Norfolk. He was a wild man - an expert brick mason by day (thanks to his dad) and a hair swinging, tight-pants wearing virtuoso guitar player by night (at least in his heavy-metal younger years).
In the 80s, he and his band struck out for California in the hopes of making it big. And while a star was not born (not him anyway), he did manage to meet a few stars (and feed himself) by doing custom stonework on LA mansions (again, thanks Dad). Still, Chuck did not lack bravado. At one party, he spotted Lisa Marie Presley, wriggled his way over and asked for her phone number (he didn't get it).
Back in Virginia, he met and married Janet in 1992, settled in York County, operated his own masonry business, roared around on a motorcycle and joined a church, where he put his gift with the guitar to work in the praise band.
Chuck had his struggles – plenty of them – but he was someone you could call if you needed anything. He was generous, tender-hearted, sarcastic, irreverent, full of laughter. He moved various family members' furniture so many times he began to think that armoire was his.
And he loved his boys. He taught them how to buy and trade pick-ups (stop already!), how much a tough guy can love a little lap dog, and how to be kind and work hard. He also taught them how to keep loving someone even when they fail.
He's survived by those boys, Evan and Andrew Hipp, Evan's wife Mallory and new bragging material, grandson Dawson. Also, Chuck's dad, Al Hipp, and two sisters, Tana Hipp-Martin and Niki Weaver, plus numerous nieces and nephews. His dear mother, Kay, passed away in 2005.
A viewing will be held Saturday, Nov. 2 from 4-7 pm at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home on Tidewater Drive. The service will be Sunday. Nov. 3 at 2 pm (same location), with interment at a later date.
Chuck would want you to come as you are, right? (No funeral clothes.) Instead of flowers, he'd probably like you to make a donation to his church: Northside Christian in Yorktown.
Chuck never stopped trying. Never stopped reaching for God. We believe he's at peace now.
We found $87 in his nightstand. We're buying lottery tickets. Because maybe, just maybe, he accidentally left us a million bucks.

I had the pleasure of playing with Chuck as part of the Northside worship band. His skill made the experience fun...plus he was always happy to be there!

I was immediately attracted to Chuck the first time I heard him play the guitar. I used to run the soundboard at church. Every Sunday, the very first thing I did was look at the line-up looking and hoping to see that Chuck was scheduled to play. I always pushed the volume a bit higher with Chuck. He was my buddy and I will always miss him.

Me and Chuck became best friends pretty much right when I met him at the first WOF meeting i went to, he came up and introduced himself to me and we got to find out we had a lot in common, from that day on we pretty much hung out worked and talked everyday, he was the most generous person I think I ever knew, he was always saying something goofy to make you Crack up. We would call each other, when we didn't have no work and go for a ride and stop and get lunch. We always would call or text each other, if something was bothering us and get together, to see if we could figure out a way to straighten it out, what ever it was.we went on a ride one time, it seamed like every 5 minutes, something was wrong with Chucks bike, so we had to pull over and fix whatever it was. First his bags opened, then he was running out of gas and then I think the bike just quit, I think he accidentally hit the kill switch. So I laughed. When he finally figured it out. But one of the saddest things in my life was when me and my friend went to check on him and found him deceased. I love and miss you Brother forever, RIP

I never knew Chuck, but I feel like I would have loved him based on this remembrance of him. Great write up! May God´s light be shown through the shared thoughts of a brother in Christ.
