Clair S. Shaffer, 81, of Blairsville, PA, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on August 26, 1944, in Indiana, PA, he was the son of the late Claude E. and Lila Shaffer.
Clair proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he was stationed aboard the USS Essex CVS 9 as a GMG3. He was a life member of the Indiana VFW, American Legion and DAV. His years of honorable service shaped the steadfast values of commitment and responsibility that defined his life.
Clair was employed by Helen Mining Co. as a maintenance foreman and section foreman from 1970 – 1993, and Latrobe Steel from 1995 – 2010. He was a member of the Homer City Presbyterian Church.
Clair was an exceptional husband, a devoted father, and a proud grandfather whose work ethic and spirit set an example for all who knew him. Whether at home, at work, or in the great outdoors, Clair approached every task with care and purpose. An avid fisherman and hunter, he drew peace and joy from nature, creating memories that now live on in the hearts of those he held dear.
Clair is survived by his loving wife, Anita Shaffer; his son, Ronald Jasper, and daughter-in-law, Paula Jasper; and his dear grandchildren, Kayla (Scott) Ackerman and Austin (Natalie) Jasper. He is also survived by sisters, Sally Lydic, Mary Lazor, and Jean Uber, brother-in-law, John (Mary Jane) Griffith.
He was preceded in death by brothers, John, Clarence, James, and Thomas Shaffer; and sister, Dorothy Gima; brother-in-law, James Griffith, and sister-in-law, Shirley (Robert) Hoover.
The family expresses their heartfelt thank you to all the doctors, visiting nurses, aids, and physical therapists of Veterans Association, Bayada, 365 Hospice, and the many friends and relatives who provided comfort and care during Clair's final months.
Friends will be received on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 12 Noon until the time of service at 2:00 PM, at the Bowser Minich Funeral Home, 500 Ben Franklin Road S, Indiana, PA. Military honors will be accorded by the VFW Post 1989. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VFW Post 1989, c/o American Legion, 534 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA 15701
.
His quiet strength and steady presence, will be deeply missed by family, friends, and all who had the fortune of knowing him. May he rest peacefully.
