Claire Barrett

Claire A. Barrett passed away peacefully at her home on Cape Cod, surrounded by her loving family.

Claire was the cherished wife of the late Martin "Marty" W. Barrett, with whom she shared more than 66 years of marriage.

Born to James and Augusta Splaine, Claire was the eldest of seven children. She attended Blessed Sacrament High School in Jamaica Plain, and, after graduation, began working at Boston Edison, where she met her future husband, Marty.

The couple married and built a life together, raising their four children – Deborah, Martin Jr., John, and Carole – in Dedham, Mass. While her children were young, Claire dedicated herself to being a stay-at-home mother. She later worked at James Bliss Marine, managing warehouse operations, and then at Newton South High School, where she took great pride in running the cafeteria. After retiring to Cape Cod with Marty, Claire spent countless hours at her beloved Covell Beach, which she dubbed "the best beach on the Cape."

Claire is survived by her four children: Deborah and her husband Robert McGrath, Martin and his wife Beth Barrett, John and his wife Elena Barrett, and Carole and her husband Steven Dicks. She was the proud grandmother of Kaleigh and her husband Jared Meegan, Meaghan and her husband Jeremy Gauvain, Connor and his wife Audrey McGrath, Nicole and Natalie Dicks, James Barrett, and Martin Barrett III. She was also adored by her great grandchildren, Grant and Finn Meegan and Harrison Gauvain.

Claire was predeceased by her siblings Joanne Sweeney, Rita McCluskey, Marilyn Kilgallon, Maureen Hickey, and James Splaine. She is lovingly remembered by her sister Carole Splaine, along with many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and dear friends on the Cape.

She will be remembered for her unwavering love and dedication to her family and friends, her chicken salad, "melt in your mouth" mashed potatoes and her special Christmas Eve baked stuffed shrimp.

For many years, Claire volunteered with the Gift Program at Our Lady of Victory Parish in Centerville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the program.

Arrangements are under the care of Chapman Funeral Home. Interment will be private, with a memorial Mass to be celebrated at a later date.
