Clarence Eugene "Gene" Mercer

November 29, 1937- August 30, 2025

Clarence Eugene "Gene" Mercer of Fort Walton Beach, 87 years, died on August 30, 2025, of natural causes. Born in Panama City, FL, to Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Mercer, he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma "Jan" Mercer of Fort Walton Beach, and his son, David Mercer of Fort Walton Beach. He will be missed by the rest of his family (four grandchildren and a great-grandchild) and siblings (Elmer Mercer, Wayne Mercer, and Barbara Leveritt).

His passing was preceded by his daughter, Abby J. Mercer, and brother, Glen Mercer, of Fort Walton Beach.

He served in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1965. He continued in public service by serving with the Florida Marine Patrol for several decades, rising to the rank of Lieutenant of the panhandle region. He turned down many promotions to remain in (his words) "God's Country". He loved freshwater fishing, building additions to their home, and family gatherings.

Thanks to the medical heroes of Fort Walton Beach/Destin Hospital and Fort Walton Rehab Center for their care and support for him.

Service at 12 noon for the family, 1 pm for public visitation, and 2 pm service. Followed by the burial at Beal Memorial cemetery.

If you wish to donate in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Foundation (www.alzfdn.org).
