Claude Gove Obituary

CLAUDE M. GOVE
February 26, 1940 ˜ April 16,
2023

Claude M. Gove unexpectedly passed on Sunday, April 16, 2023.
He was born Feb. 26, 1940, in Omak, WA, an only child of Lilian and Oras Gove.
He graduated in 1958 from Omak High and was president of his class. He always said, ”once president of a smaller school, you are president for life.” He remained close to his classmates throughout the years. He was involved in all sports, but his Basketball skills awarded him a scholarship at Central Washington where he began his studies to obtain his masters degree in Education.
While in College he met the love of his life and best friend Dee, They quickly married and began their family in Ellensburg, WA. In 1970 the family of five moved to Vancouver. Claude was the Principal at five elementary schools, Sarah J. Anderson, Eisenhower, Peter S. Ogden, Harney, and Hazel Dell. Claude had a wonderful passion for education and immersed himself in every school blending imagination with humor to engage the students and staff. He often wore costumes to enhance the stories or learning process.
He was devoted and loved his family so much that he was involved in all of their activities from coaching little league, and soccer, Camp Fire Girls, tea parties with granddaughters, volleyball and basketball supporting grandson, and great granddaughter.
His love of life, laughter, and the gift of gab awarded him many lifelong friendships.
His kind nature was a magnet to many. There was never a stranger that didn’t become a friend. His many traditions included all outdoor activities, hunting, fishing, guys trips to sporting events, Blazer, Seahawk, Mariners, and Husky games.
Their home was ever open to friends and family as well as hosting multiple exchange students, some becoming family as well.
After retirement, he and his wife Dee started a business doing estate sales where he would enco former students. They often praised and affirmed that his guidance and mentorship assisted in their future success.
The Estate sale business provided the ability to take adventures and travel to more than 100 countries further enriching their knowledge of the world, and other cultures.
Although his passing was sudden, he lived a full and beautiful life that has been an example to us all. His mentorship and wisdom will be greatly missed, but he gets an A+ in a well lived life!
He leaves behind his wife, Dee; his children, Jill-Robb, Jerry-Carrie, and Martin; as well as his grandchildren, Torren, Taylor, Lauryn, and Amber; and great-granddaughter Gabriella. His lovely daughter Jodi passed in 2004. They are now laughing together in heaven.
His Celebration of life will be at 11 am on Saturday, May 13, at Messiah Lutheran Church: 905 NW 94th St. Vancouver, WA 98665. Mr Gove touched the lives of so many children. We feel God sent him here to keep kids safe and happy. My sons have nothing but happy memories of the Hazel Dell principal. My favorite was when he dressed up as a mad scientist for the "spooktacular" every year.

My compliments to the insightful authors of this obituary as it captured so well the talents and skills, the strengths and compassion, and the loyal devotion of Claude; the educational leader, the kind friend, the dedicated family man, and the terrific human being. Your words are a beautiful tribute to a wonderful man.

I, like many others, knew Claude professionally in Vancouver School District, and in my three different capacities with him over the years, I admired his leadership, his supportive involvement, his direct, no nonsense approach, coupled with his fairness, humor, and calm manner. It was a pleasure working for and with him. But most important was Claude´s personal connections, when he´d affirm you for a job well done, he´d offer guidance and thoughtfulness if you needed encouragement, he´d use his gentle giant persona to redirect students, and through it all, he became a colleague, a mentor, a for-life friend.
I haven´t seen Claude in years since we both retired, but I would imagine if I could have, at any moment of connection, I would have found myself in a delightful, caring conversation that would have brought a smile to both of us.

Claude was genuinely himself, an individual who was fun, committed, and cared about people, and we respected and admired him for it.
Much love and condolences to all his family, and especially Dee. He is missed.

We loved you as our 6th grade teacher all those years ago and here we are, a couple of years ago, together again to give you a plaque that hung by the door of your first classroom. So thankful we had that time with you!

This is one of many principals that I had the opportunity to work with he was always kind to me since I was a sub. He always was at the front door to find out who was walking into his school he was very friendly and caring he was always on top of the going's on in his school. May he rest in peace now.

Claude became President for Life of our 1958 Omak High School graduating class. There is no questions that Claude was exactly the right man for that job. He maintained personal contact with most of the '58 Class, and always expressed his very personal interest in each and every one of us. There is a huge hole in my heart where Claude regularly called to ask about my well-being. He even called me twice in the week before his passing. We all will miss our tall President.

Mr. Gove~ Knowing you was the greatest gift that was ever given to us. Each and everyone of us in your first class share the love and friendship that you provided us. I can't begin to say how much you will be missed by us. Dee was one lucky woman to have been able to share you with a lot of people. You DID make a difference in our lives.

Love,

Lauryn and family,
I am so sorry to hear about Claude, or Mr Gove as I knew him from the 80´s when he was my principal at Hazel Dell Elementary. What a wonderful, admirable, wise person who left an impact on me since I graced the halls of that school. Once I told him that he knew many of my family members in the school district- it became
daily hellos, high fives, and his great smile! I thought of him often throughout the years. Sending my condolences, thoughts, and prayers to you all. He will be greatly missed.

Thoughts and prayers to the Gove family. I remember Mr. Gove as Principal at my elementary school. He had a tremendously positive impact upon me at an early age. I recall that as an elementary school aged child, he was the tallest man I'd ever seen, but he was so kind, principled and genuine in how he treated the kids at the school. I really appreciated his emphasis upon warning the students about the dangers of drug use, which really stuck with me through my entire life. He always struck me as a man who really cared about those he interacted with at the school. We need more men like him in the world. My condolences to the Gove family.

So many children and families benefitted from the leadership and nurturing experienced while Clauade Gove (and his remarkable sidekick, Ron Albaugh) graced the halls of Eisenhower Elementary back in the day. Our best wishes to Claude's family and many thanks, The Grammer Family

As a mentor and a friend, Claude was unmatched. Even if we might have had a tussle or two on the court!
