Clayton Clevinger, of LaGrange, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 20, 2024, following an extended illness. Born in Belcher, Kentucky, on March 5, 1937, he was the son of the late Earnest Clevinger, Sr., and Bessie Davis Clevinger.
Clayton's early years were spent in the mountains of Kentucky, where he learned the values of hard work and integrity. At the age of 18, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. As an airplane mechanic, he traveled the world, serving on tours in Europe and the Philippines and even helping transport President Eisenhower's entourage during a Far East tour. He took pride in his service and was honorably discharged after eight years, having achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.
After his military service, Clayton worked for Glidden – Millenium Chemical Company, where he dedicated 35 years before retiring. His colleagues admired his commitment, work ethic, and quiet strength.
Clayton was a man known for his sacrificial love, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family. He found his greatest joy in being surrounded by his loved ones, cherishing every moment with them. A man of deep faith, he relied on God's strength through both life's trials and triumphs, always remaining honorable and faithful.
In addition to his parents, Clayton was preceded in death by his brothers, Earnest Clevinger, Jr., and Gerald Clevinger, as well as his grandson, Caleb Woltmann.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Lillian Joyce Prewitt Clevinger; his children, Melissa Clevinger Woltmann (Dan) and Michael Clayton Clevinger (Ruth); his cherished grandchildren, Nathan Woltmann and Erin Clevinger Geary (Matt); his siblings, Carl Clevinger (Margie) and Betty Lou Workman; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will miss him dearly.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Clayton's caregivers at Wesley Woods of Newnan and Inspire Hospice, whose compassionate care touched his life and helped ease his final days. Their love and dedication were felt deeply by all who loved him.
A celebration of Clayton's life will be held graveside at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2024, at Meadoway Gardens in LaGrange, Georgia.
