Clyde Childers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2025.
Clyde Joseph Childers, born on June 8, 1940, in Decatur, Alabama, died peacefully on August 31, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family and the steady stream of friends who never stopped showing up, just like he always had for them.

Clyde's life stretched from Alabama to Ohio, Georgia to Indianapolis. In Massillon, Ohio, he was a football legend. A star for the Massillon Tigers, he was named First Team All-Ohio, one of many awards and honors he received during his football career. He was recruited from all over the country, but proudly chose to be a Georgia Bulldog and remained a lifelong Dawg and member of the UGA Football Lettermen's Club. He was a 50 year member of the Millersville Masonic Lodge, a member of the Carmel American Legion, and served on the BOSMA Board of Directors for several years.

After a brief stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, he served his country in the U.S. Army stateside during Vietnam, then moved to Indianapolis to start his career at Ford Motor Company. Indy became home, and so did its teams. Clyde was a devoted Colts fan and was proud to be there in person for their Super Bowl win. He was a champion-level tailgater and sat in Turn 3 for every Indy 500 for decades. Both of his kids were named with loving nods to the 500 (yes, really).

Clyde never really retired from life, he just retired from Ford. In the years since, he built a community through the Cigar Box and Cigar Haven, where friendships were formed over cigars, scotch, football, and endless storytelling. He cherished his friends in the "Holy Smokes" crew, and his entire cigar-shop family who gave him years of laughter and support.

He traveled the world with Diane, making memories and sharing adventures. He was the kind of guy who could undo any good dog's manners, then laugh as they climbed into his lap. He loved trivia and knew a little bit about everything. He never missed a movie, loved golf, roller coasters, and insisted on taking each of his granddaughters to Disney World for their first magical trips.

Clyde is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Diane Marrell Childers; his children, Jill Rezek (Richard) and Gary Childers; his granddaughters, Violet Worth and Sophia Childers; his sister, Marty Brokaw; his mother-in-law, Betty Marrell; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Jake and Becky Wagner and Dennis and Sheena Marrell; his nieces and nephews; his chosen bonus family: Christian and Balie Strnad, their sons Liam and Wyatt; Roger, Marsha, and Piper Ingram; and countless close friends. He is also survived by his loyal dog, Lucky.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Georgia Brown Childers; his parents, Hubert and Lillian; his brothers, Jim and Bill Childers; and a long, beloved line of dogs who no doubt greeted him tail-wagging.

Clyde was cared for with deep compassion by extraordinary doctors and nurses, and his family will always be grateful.

Above all else, Clyde was a really good man. He listened deeply, stayed curious, worked hard, and treated everyone like a friend.

A celebration of life is being planned for October 2025.

In lieu of flowers please take care of each other, have some fun, and cheer for anyone but Georgia Tech.

Clyde was a dear person. He prepared the best salmon dinners for the college reunions of Diane, Lori and me. He will be missed, and my heart is hurting for the loss that Diane is suffering. They had a good life together, but it will now be forever changed for dear Diane. Thank you for your diligence and care, Diane. You have been a tremendous partner to him.

With love and hugs,
Linda

I was blessed to have Clyde as both a father-in-law and a friend for more than 20 years. He was my companion for superhero and action movies, a fellow history lover, and someone whose curiosity never stopped. We even traveled together to Normandy not just to see it, but to honor those who fought.

Even in these last few weeks in the hospital, his sharp wit would catch you off guard and make you laugh. That was Clyde-kind, tough, always surprising, always larger than life.

We have good memories of being Clyde & Diane´s next door neighbors for years. We remember Clyde´s kindness and sense of humor. We will light a candle at our UU congregation in his memory.

I am blessed to have called Clyde my friend for so many years now. I have had the privilege of taking care of several generations of his pets as his veterinarian. Clyde, Diane and I quickly became friends. I don´t know if I have ever met a more decent man. He was truly wise and a great listener, but what always struck me the most was Clyde´s humility. And he always had that sparkle in his eye.
His memory will live on in his family and friends.
Rest in peace, my friend.

Diane and family,

Please accept my condolences. Clyde was a special man. We became friends through our mutual love of cigars and fellowship.

He was always upbeat, kind, and humble. I marveled at the range and depth of his knowledge on so many subjects. One of his gifts was his lack of ego, shown through his ability to let others talk, sometimes on and on, often about a subject he probably knew twice as much about, without correcting them or needing to remind them how much he knew.

I also respected and admired Clyde most of all for accepting everyone for who they were, without regard to race, creed or religion.

They don´t make them like him anymore. Very sorry for your loss. I will really miss him.

I only met Clyde a few years ago at Cigar Haven. He was the kind of person who after talking with him for just a few minutes made you feel like a friend! I'm going to miss his stories and words of wisdom. I'm sure he's sitting in a Colts recliner in Heaven.

Clyde was one heck of a brother-in-law. Always treated Sheena and me with the utmost and respect. Always kind to us and open. So sad that we live so far apart from Diane and Clyde that as time moved on we didn't see them often enough. Rest in peace brother. You'll be missed by many

I had the honor and privilege to meet Clyde on only a few occasions. Time and distance separated us. Diane was a classmate of mine from Valparaiso High Schhol. I was so happy when they found each other. Diane adored him. They had a greet marriage. I am so sorry for your loss my friend. Clyde will be waiting for you and will show you around the streets of Heaven. Love always.
