Clyde Doxey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Metropolitan Funeral Service - Berkley Chapel on Apr. 4, 2025.
On April 2, 2025, in the presence of family and close friends, Rev. Clyde L. Doxey, Jr., went home to be with the Lord. He was the eldest child of Deacon Clyde L. Doxey, Sr., and Deaconess Evelyn Reid Doxey, and grandson of Rev. Moses and Mary Reid. He was predeceased by his brother, Clinton D. Doxey, his sister Beverly Rodgers, his parents, and his grandparents.
Clyde attended Virginia Beach Public Schools and graduated from Kempsville High School in 1972, where he excelled in several areas, particularly in track and field. After graduating, he enlisted in the military. Clyde achieved the rank of Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, serving from October 1975 to October 1978, and he continued his service in the Reserves until 1981. During his active service, he qualified to become a paratrooper in Germany and an Anti-Tank Assaultman with the 0351 Infantry. Corporal Doxey received an honorable discharge and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and Meritorious Mast.
Clyde obtained two associate degrees from Tidewater Community College: one in Educational Services and the other in General Studies. He later enrolled at Norfolk State University and graduated in 1989 with cum laude honors, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. Additionally, he was a 1993 graduate of the Evans-Smith Leadership Training Institute with a Certificate in Religious Studies and later matriculated at Virginia Union University in pursuit of a master's degree.
Clyde accepted Christ at an early age and was licensed in the ministry on January 24, 1993, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia, by the late Bishop W. Darryl Scott, Sr. There, he served as an associate minister, chairman of the New Members Committee, and choir director for the Community Choir. He was later ordained in ministry in November 2001 at Gideon's Riverside Fellowship in Norfolk, Virginia, by his uncle and mentor, the late Rev. Dr. Milton A. Reid. Rev. Doxey was the founding pastor of New Covenant Fellowship Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia, where he served as pastor for 20 years until he retired in 2022.
Rev. Doxey was the founder of the organization A.B.S.T.A.I.N. (Always Bringing Support To Another In Need), which was designed to give youth an alternative to violence and other inappropriate behaviors. He was also employed as an Engineering Technician at Naval Operating Base Norfolk, Virginia, retiring after 35 years of service.
Affectionately known to his family as "Junebug," Clyde's pastimes included playing the bass guitar as well as the saxophone. He had a melodious tenor voice, and his favorite song to sing was "My Soul Has Been Anchored in the Lord." He was a die-hard fan of the Green Bay Packers and was always the life of the party. Clyde was always telling jokes and making everyone laugh and feel at home. He was very kind and generous and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed a blessing.
He leaves to cherish his memory his high school sweetheart Cynthia Powell Doxey, to whom he was married for 46 years, and their three blessings, Pastor Cory G. Doxey (Nicole) of Chesapeake, Virginia; Catrina R. Doxey of Bakersfield, California; and Clyde L. Doxey, III (Erin) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; five granddaughters: Khayla, Kiah, Khimani, Kaci, and Kaelyn; two grandsons, Chanson and Clyde L. Doxey, IV; a west coast daughter Rashanda; two bonus grandsons, Jacob and Troy Sr.; two bonus great-grandsons, Troy Jr. and Malakhi; two sisters, Chereta Doxey and Pamela Doxey; three brothers: Christopher Doxey, Troy Doxey, and John Doxey; two brothers-in-law, Frank Powell, Jr. (Denene) and Aubrey Rodgers; two sisters-in-law, Terri D. "Tess" Powell and Linda Brooks (Leroy); one special aunt, Marian Reid, and one special uncle, Walter Gilchrist, Sr. Also left to hold his memory close are Walter Gilchrist, Jr., Michael Melvin, Sr., Andrew Gills, his road dog Thorngton "Chuck" Russell, his "Village Soul" band members, and an invaluable inner circle consisting of Pastor Charles Beamon and Lady Patricia Beamon, Deacon Larnell and Deaconess Laverne Smith, Rhonda Winborne, Elder Yvette Wyatt, William and Jennifer Hayes, Sheila Cross, Patricia Sheppard, Deborah Brown, Hope Ward, the Sheppard family, his entire New Covenant Fellowship Baptist Church family, and a host of relatives and friends, including his L.T.S. Conference members.
Servant of God, well done! The glorious warfare's passed; the battle's fought, the race is won, and thou art home at last!
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. – Jude 1:24-25 KJV
