Clyde Lee Longan, 81, of Altamont, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, March 22, 2024.
He was born on March 8, 1943, to Carl and Fay (West) Longan in
Springfield, Missouri. As a young boy, he grew up and attended school in Springfield, graduating from Central High School. He later earned an Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ozark Vocational Technical School.
Clyde and his future wife, Wanda Fortner, grew up in the same neighborhood and their families attended the same church. Their first date was going for a Coke after Sunday night church. In February of 1963, Clyde joined the United States Naval Reserve and the couple corresponded while he served two years of active duty on the USS Mountrial. After earning the rank of 3rd class Boatswain's Mate, Clyde returned to Springfield. Clyde and Wanda were united in marriage on December 3, 1965.
In 1969, the couple moved from Springfield to
Kansas City, Missouri, where Clyde worked as a draftsman. During these years, the couple's three children were born. In 1975, they moved to Winfield, Kansas, where Clyde worked for Peabody Gordon and Platt, learning to work on industrial burners in their Research and Development Lab. The young family moved to Jenks, Oklahoma in 1980, where Clyde worked for Zinc Industries in Tulsa. In 1983, Clyde went to work for Power Flame, Inc. in Parsons, where he again worked in research and development. The family lived in nearby Altamont. Around 1989, Clyde began to see the need for an industrial burner service company in Southeast Kansas and the surrounding area. He opened his own company, Combustion Services, Inc. His son, Derrick, took over the business in 2021, after being Clyde's right hand for many years.
Everywhere they lived, Clyde was faithful to raise his family in a local church. He loved to study God's Word and became very knowledgeable of it. Sharing God's Word was important to him and he taught Sunday school or led home Bible studies for many years. For 10 years, he helped with the Montgomery County Jail Ministry. He leaves behind many worn Bibles and commentaries. His desire in life was to fight a good fight, to finish the course God had for him, and to keep the faith.
