Obituary published on Legacy.com by Whitley Memorial Funeral Home, Inc. - Kalamazoo on Jun. 27, 2024.
Corey D. Bernheisel, age 39, passed away unexpectedly on June 21, 2024. He was born on December 18, 1984, in Battle Creek, the son of Mathew and Lavona "Bo" (Burbank) Bernheisel. Corey resided in Galesburg for most of his adult life with Sarah Georgeau Bernheisel and their son, Liam Bernheisel. He graduated from Athens High School in 2003, where he played football, and went on to attend Central Michigan University. After leaving college, Corey worked as an engineer at Musashi, where his natural talent for math helped him excel. His time at Musashi afforded him the opportunity to travel to Japan, where its beauty and culture started his love of travel. Corey especially loved traveling the world with his family. In addition to traveling, he enjoyed watching the Detroit Lions, fishing, floating down the river, going "up north" to the family cabin, riding quads and side by sides, muddin', building Lego with Liam, drawing, and having cookouts with family and friends. Corey was smart, strong, capable, selfless, generous, and devoted. He was one of the first people you'd call if you needed help and always available with no questions asked. He was known for his great spirit, big heart, and always smiling. Corey was gentle, athletic, funny, a fighter, empathetic, understanding, adventurous, uplifting, hardworking, crazy in a good way, outgoing, and determined. He loved deeply, genuinely cared for his people, and was truly good. Corey's pride and joy was his son, Liam. He lived for the moments when he was able to teach Liam something new or when Liam conquered a new challenge. Corey adored and loved him fiercely. Corey is survived by his son and favorite little man, Liam Bernheisel; his father, Mathew Bernheisel; his mother, Lavona "Bo" (Burbank) Bernheisel; his sister, Cassie (Bernheisel) Ptasznik, and nephews Phillip Wood, Jonny Wheeler, and Kaiden Wheeler; his brother, Kenny Bernheisel (Amanda (Green) Bernheisel), and nephews Jackson Bernheisel, Jack Terpening, Matthew Terpening, Andrew Terpening, Cole Thomas, and nieces Ella Bernheisel and Karlee Terpening. Corey is also survived by his best friends Chris Chlystek, Richie Hassenzahl, Kendall Cheyne, Tim Hendrix, Mike Georgeau, Ronnie Cripe, Keith Morales, Greg Fromm, and Sarah Georgeau Bernheisel. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Robert and Mary Burbank, and his paternal grandparents, John H. Bernheisel (Vesta Bernheisel) and Virgie Serger. The family welcomes everyone to come celebrate Corey's life from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at Richland Township Park (6996 32nd St N, Richland, MI 49083). In lieu of donations, the family kindly requests that you consider using those funds for activities Corey would have enjoyed. Spend quality time with friends and family at a cookout, enjoy an evening of bowling, take a drive in the country with your windows down and music blaring, go fishing, or simply take a moment to be grateful and wear your cheesiest smile.
