"Connie the Candy Maker"
Connie Korompilas nee Connie Skeptaris passed away after a very brief illness on January 11, 2025. She was born in Chicago on March 22, 1937. Her parents were Peter and Alexandra Skeptaris. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, George Korompilas, her two children Alexandra and Lewis (Debbie), her three grandchildren Dena, George and Christina and her three siblings Gerry (Frank) Zizzo, Dino (Jacqui) Skeptar and Nick (Amy) Skeptaris and many loved nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her partner in daily crime Daisy Korompilas, the doggy love of her life. She married George Korompilas on May 6th, 1962. They had attended Amundson high school together. She had two children; Alexandra, her best friend and Lewis and his wife Debbie a daughter-in-law whom she loved with all her heart. She was blessed with three grandchildren, Dena, George, and Christina who completed her life. She truly lived a happy life made even happier by her grandchildren whom she absolutely adored, Connie and George worked tirelessly to build their family and their future. Connie began working at the young age of 12 years old with her father Peter at the family's candy shop DeLos Candies on Pulaski and 26th Street in Chicago. Connie then managed the Fannie May candies in Lincolnwood followed by many years managing Country Maid Bakeries in Northbrook and Highland Park. She worked way past retirement at the Northbrook train station coffee shop called The Grind where she spent early mornings with her good friend Charlie. Connie was always generous with her time for family and friends. Her work ethic could best be described by a compliment given to her by her father-in-law Louis Korompilas. One evening when she came home after working 15 hours for the sixth day in a row, he went up to her and said "Connie, can I ask you a question, what material did God make you from? I have never met a person like you!" Her husband, George was a successful restauranteur owning The Chandelier Restaurant in Skokie for many years and then for many more years, running the Glenview Park District restaurant. Together, Connie and George started out together, young with very little and built a robust livelihood where they were able to move to Glenview and reside in the same beautiful home for 50 years. Connie and her family have always been of strong faith and have attended Saint Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Glenview for all of those years. Connie was called the Candy and Cheesecake Lady by so many that knew her. She was famous for her extensive knowledge and preparation of fine chocolates superior to anything that could be store-bought. She also was so well known for a particular way she made a cheesecake with handmade strawberry and cherry glazed topping. She made Party favors, for many many weddings, birthdays, and special events. Handmade party favors like chocolate lollipops, discs and chocolate sculptures, all of them personalized for the special celebrating person. Connie had an effervescent personality. Everyone loved her and she was a very great friend to many. She was thankful to have wonderful in-laws; Louis and Georgia Korompilas. She was also extremely close to all of her brother-in-law's and sister-in-law 's and truly loved all of her nieces and nephews. Everyone knew her to be a very strong and incredibly kind woman. She is already greatly missed and saddened by her absence, which will be felt forever. We ask that all friends and family who would like to visit her and celebrate her life, please join the family at Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church at 1401 Wagner Rd., Glenview on Tuesday January 14th at 10:30 AM for visitation. Funeral service immediately to follow at 11:00 AM. Interment at Elmwood Cemetery and Mausoleum in River Grove, IL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Saints Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church would be appreciated.
May Connie's memory be eternal.
