Connie was a smart and interesting guy who possessed savvy business skills and a tough but good heart. His demeanor and unassuming ways never indicated he was anything but a quiet NH farmer just getting by, as he was often seen riding down the street on his bicycle with a large ice cream cone in one hand.
My dad knew and respected Connie as they both enjoyed working their land including yard maintenance, tree cutting and wood splitting in preparation for the cold dark winters.
They mowed their large field tracts of hay while sitting upon semi- commercial size tractors. My dad for the horses. Connie for whatever, as we hardly spoke. I felt that asking him might have been akin to requesting to also know his bank balance.
I think I just knew better at a very early age.
I am sure both could have afforded laborers to do the work but I´m guessing neither enjoyed paying others for labor they could do themselves.
When dad died I prepared to do the field work until I saw quiet Connie cutting my dad's field on his tractor .... We never discussed it, as the transition seemed natural and fluid. Connie had assumed control of the work they had mutually enjoyed for so long. It appeared to me that it was a sign of respect
It was Connie´s field now, as he continued to work it. A tribute between two like-minded acquaintances who never socialized and hardly spoke in the 60 years of knowing each other unless it was very, very. very important. They did not have to speak as their relationship was just understood.
Glad to have known him. A true New Englander among the many who are ao rapidly drifting away.
