Obituary published on Legacy.com by Halley Olsen Murphy Funerals & Cremations - Lancaster on Jul. 3, 2025.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Cora Belle Sweet McCrumb, who passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, at the age of 95.
Born on November 16, 1929, to Henry (Hank) and Ellen Sweet, Cora grew up amidst the expansive beauty of Valyermo Ranch. Her childhood, shared with older sisters Bette and Ruth, was a testament to simpler times, when you could ride your horse seven miles to Littlerock to spend the day with friends. She attended combined grade classes under the cherished guidance of beloved teacher, Jane Lee.
Cora's journey led her to Antelope Valley High School, where she met the love of her life, James McCrumb. Their union marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with shared adventures and unwavering devotion. In 1953, Cora and Jim established their family home on Avenue R-3 in Palmdale. As their children grew, both Cora and Jim dedicated their careers to the Palmdale School District. Jim served as the district's 10th school bus driver, while Cora brought warmth and care to the Palmdale School cafeteria.
Beyond their professional lives, Cora and Jim shared a vibrant array of interests and community involvement. They cherished family camping trips, were active members of the Palmdale Gem & Mineral Club, and enjoyed fellowship with the Elks & Emblem Club. Many will remember them working security at the back gate of the AV Fair, or casting lines while fishing at Fin & Feather, attending Kepple Luncheons with Jane Lee, and always prioritizing time with dear family and friends.
Later in life, Cora and Jim embraced a unique lifestyle, spending summers tending their garden at their beloved Idaho summer house and winters enjoying the tranquility north of Mojave in Fremont Valley. When Jim's health declined, they made the difficult decision to sell their Idaho home to be closer to Kaiser medical facilities.
After the profound loss of her beloved husband, Cora remained in Fremont Valley, finding comfort and companionship in her community. She actively shared her interests with the California City Friends of the Library, and cherished time spent with friends at the California City Senior Center and her community church.
Cora is survived by her loving children: Jim McCrumb, Deena Chacanaca, Phillip McCrumb, and Michelle Blair. Her gentle spirit, enduring kindness, and unwavering love for her family and friends will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Cora will be laid to rest on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Lancaster Cemetery. She will be interred beside the love of her heart, Jim, where they will forever rest together. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Cora, please visit our floral store.
