Cornelia Campbell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery on Feb. 2, 2026.
Cornelia "Sherry" Hurdle-Campbell, unspoken matriarch, beloved mother, grandmother, wife, and friend, passed away on January 29, 2026, at the age of 81.

Born on September 10, 1944, in Marshall County, Mississippi, to the late Mary Louise McCandless and I. J. Hurdle, a sharecropper for the Pipper Farm in Collierville, Sherry was raised in poverty alongside her brother, Benny Hurdle. She overcame many struggles, including nearly succumbing to polio. She later fully recovered, went on to play basketball, and became Homecoming Queen of Collierville High School, where she graduated in 1962. Sherry met Daniel Campbell shortly after graduation. They married and moved to Memphis, where she and Daniel raised three children.

While holding full- or part-time jobs, Sherry ensured her children experienced the most life had to offer. She opened her home to others, serving as a den mother in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She made time for her children to participate in sports, crafts, and the arts. She had an amazing talent for sewing and made each of her daughters' formal dresses. Sherry personally cared for multiple generations of family, including great-grandparents, a great-aunt, grandparents, children, and her late husband.

Sherry was a strong Christian woman who walked daily with the Lord. She was a member of Hope Church Memphis. God had a special way of sharing His love for the world through Sherry.

She loved traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, birdwatching, and even spotting the occasional eagle. Sherry had a nurturing heart and adopted countless cats and dogs, loving them all fiercely.

Later in life, Sherry began a career at ServiceMaster Corporation, where she worked for over 30 years. She retired as a senior specialist in franchise compliance. She was recognized for her lifelong service to others and, in 2010, was awarded the company's highest honor, the Marion E. Wade Award.

Sherry lived most of her adult life in Memphis, TN. In 2024, she moved to Oxford, MS, where she was known for her warm and spontaneous personality as the "Jazzy Lady."

Sherry was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Daniel H. Campbell III; her parents, I. J. and Mary Hurdle; and her brother, Benny Hurdle. She is survived by her son, Daniel Campbell; daughters, Mary Kelley and Rachel Scoggins; and a host of grandchildren: Hayden Kelley, Constantin Campbell, Andie Kelley, Sophia Campbell, Chloey Scoggins, Ethan Scoggins, and Nick Austin.

Sherry was our rock. She will be missed more than words can say, and will live on in our hearts.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM on February 7, 2026, at Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery. A funeral service will follow immediately after. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
