Family and friends are respectfully invited to visit with the family Tuesday morning, February 24th, at the Dello Russo Funeral Home 306 Main St., Medford, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a prayer service beginning at 11 a.m. in the Funeral Home. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

Cosmo A. Volpe, age 99, of Medford passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, February 12th, at Tufts Medical Center of Boston. Born in Gaeta, Italy, he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Victoria (Di'Biase) Volpe. Cosmo arrived in the U.S. at the age of two, and was raised and educated in Somerville. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, after which he married and settled in Medford. Cosmo was employed for many years by the City of Medford, and retired as the Superintendent of Parks. He loved the City of Medford and served on the Hormel Stadium Commission.

Family was absolutely everything to Cosmo, and his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and even his granddog Meeshka, were the number one priorities in his life. Cosmo loved Boston sports teams, especially the Red Sox, and coached Wellington-Glenwood Little League Baseball. He loved gardening and gave away all he vegetables he grew. Cosmo was a talented cook and enjoyed cookouts best of all. He also loved trips to Foxwoods and Atlantic City, and would play the lottery every evening.

Cosmo was the beloved husband of 57 years to the love of his life, the late Jean (Panico) Volpe. He was the devoted father of Vincent P. Volpe and his wife Dora of Billerica, Paul J. Volpe, and Jeanmarie Gray and her husband Steven, all of Medford. He was the loving grandfather of Natasha Giragosian and her husband John of Medford, Jarred Gray and his wife Alana of Swampscott, and Justin Gray and his wife Stephanie of Medford. Cosmo was the cherished great grandfather of Emma, Layla and Johnny Giragosian, and Aurora and Charlotte Gray. He was the dear brother of the late Elizabeth Albano and her husband Vincent, and is survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Cosmo's family would like to gratefully acknowledge the dedicated doctors and nurses at Tufts Medical Center of Boston for the loving care they provided in his last days.

A funeral service will be conducted in the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Tuesday, February 24th at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family prior to the service from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in Cosmo's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memorials Processing, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.

My condolences to the Volpe family. Cosmo will be greatly missed by those of us that saw firsthand, his compassion for all people. His dedication to Medford and his strong work ethic had no equal. As one of the founding members of the Hormel Stadium Commission Cosmo was tireless in his enthusiasm in his efforts to 'do it right' for the betterment of our residents. And, as many of us knew, he grew the best tomatoes in the area and always shared the bounty.

A great man has left us but his legacy lives on.
