Craig Chatman, a beloved son, brother, father, and grandparent, passed away peacefully in his hometown of Grand Rapids, MI, on August 19, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on December 27, 1948, he was a kind-hearted soul who always managed to give more than he had, leaving a lasting impression on all who crossed his path.

Craig’s story began in Grand Rapids, where he was raised by his cherished parents, Clarence L. Chatman and Jessie Hole/Paas. He grew up with a band of brothers, Michael, Kurt, and Leo, as well as with the loving support of his sisters-in-law, Jennie and Michele. As a member of the military, Craig served honorably in the Army, reaching the rank of Sergeant and earning the esteemed Bronze Star for his bravery and commitment.

Throughout his life, Craig treasured moments spent in the warm embrace of his family. He particularly loved gathering in the backyard of his daughter’s house, where laughter filled the air as he delighted in the company of his grandkids. The 4th of July holds a special place in the hearts of many, particularly Craig's, as it was a holiday that brought him immense joy and a chance to share his love for fireworks and family gatherings.

In his downtime, Craig found pleasure in watching races and building model cars, hobbies that fueled his creativity and brought him peace. His spirit radiated kindness, and his generous nature inspired those fortunate enough to know him. Craig luminesced love and affection, leaving behind a legacy reflected in the lives of his surviving family members: his sister, Margaret Herweyer; brothers Leo, Joe, and Jeff Chatman; children Jason Scott, Elizabeth Marie Nguyen(Chatman), Kurt Michael, Christopher Wayne, and Amanda Christine Fitzgerald(Chatman); as well as his son-in-law, Thanh Nguyen.

Though Craig will be profoundly missed, the heartfelt memories he created with his family and the kindness he shared with others will forever remain etched in their hearts. He was a man who knew the importance of connection, and his warmth will continue to be a guiding light for those who carry his memory forward.
