Craig Gruber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 5, 2015.
Craig was a famous musician, his music history & bio can be seen online. For this memorial, we will write about him as we knew him best, and as a member of our family. A Celebration of Craig's life will take place in St. Augustine, Florida on Wednesday, July 29th at The Historic Casa Monica Hotel from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. Please contact the family for details if you plan to attend.
Craig loved fast & beautiful race cars. He owned and refurbished a pair of vintage Porsches and enjoyed going to race car events held at Lime Rock, CT. and Watkins Glen, N.Y.  Craig had a passion for good food and drink, a few of his favorites were Japanese and Indian, with an occasional single malt. He loved to travel and one of his favorite places was the Bahamas were he could drink a cold Kalik beer and eat a freshly made conch salad made by "Billy the conch man" as pictured. He loved the casinos and he would always win on the slot machines! Craig had great style and love for music, he would describe his style of writing music as a "song within a song."
Craig spent most of his private time with his son Graham. The two of them were inseparable as father & son. Graham stayed strong and fought the cancer fight with his Dad and never gave up hope. We know Craig has become his guiding Angel.
Our family will deeply miss him.
This is a beautiful message from his son Graham

As some may know my father, Craig Mills Gruber passed away May 5th from advanced Prostate Cancer. Myself, my aunt & a close family friend were there to be there in his final moments. He went peacefully with no drugs, & no pain. I am grateful that I was able to be with him, to tell him that I loved him, and that he was the best father, and friend that I could ever have hope to have. His positivity & energy touched so many, and left a lasting impression on even more. While many will remember him for his contributions to the heavy rock & metal scene for which he helped establish, the fame & musical prowess, the stories both good & bad, he will always be something much more than a rock legend. He was Dad.

I never met Craig although we had talked and it looked like we would work together on a new project a little while back. He seemed like a super guy with a great background and history, always sad when we loose a good one.
Regards to you all, Garry

I was one of Craig's friends from Cortland, actually Homer where he lived over a garage in an apartment with his parents. We were both bass players and besides that friends. He liked my melodic sense while I was never able to do his hard rock riffs. He also had that side to him as he turned me on to Ron Carter when he returned to town one time. At various times I knew all of those in Elf but Craig the best as we did so much together before we got out of school. At one time I heard he was making 'solo' basses which didn't surprise me a lot as we both understood how to set them right for playing.I might have never reached his level of recording but never resented what he deserved. I mourn for him more than others as in sense we were brothers even if our styles were different. We challenged each othe.

Very sad news. I guess I am the only survivor of Hard Earth. It was a privilege to have played music with you. You were for sure way a head of your time. I think back on all times you were there for me as a friend. You were with me when I lost a family member and stayed up all that night talking to me. You were there when I lost my dog I had since childhood, in fact even helped me bury him. I remember the good time we had watching the first local showing of 2001 Space Odyssey. Many good times to remember. May we meet again over space and time. I will always regret not keeping in touch with you. God bless and keep you. Sleep well my good friend.

Uncle Craig, It still seems so unreal that you are gone and it's almost too painful to think about. Giving me a little bit of peace is that you are no longer in any pain and that you are with my Mom and Grandma & Grandpa. As Graham has said, you were Dad, and to Jeff, Joe and Me, you were Uncle; the coolest uncle ever, comforting us when our Mom died and making us laugh until we cried. You always put up with us pestering you early in the morning when we were little and you had had no sleep because you played a very late gig. You were always a kind, gentle soul and so much fun. We will miss you terribly. Give our Mom a big hug and kiss and send my love to heaven.

I always imagined you Being there when I finally wrote a song that was good enough for the Radio. That I'd always have you there to tell the difference between the Good & the Bad in Music & in Life. You never forgot me, you never made me feel 2nd best, you never gave up on me, and you always loved me like a son, for Who I was. You always took up for me & I did the same for you. My selfish ways wants you to come back & stay with us, but that's not God's plan. And, now you're with him in heaven. Please wait for me & watch over me. I'll see you again one day, when my father calls me home. I love you buddy. You were my hero from Day One.

Craig, our son is such a beautiful person. If this was our sole purpose for living, it was worth every second of the joy & pain we had shared in our lives together. We have just had your celebration of Life service and it was simply the most wonderful & beautiful service the family could have wished for you. I know you were there among us, I could feel your presence as our son shared his memories and spoke so eloquently. I know you will be our son's most powerful angel, and although I carry a heavy heart that we did not have the chance to reconcile in life, we will now have many conversations in prayer and spirit as we share and guide our son together through his life. Peace, Love & Joy, Christine

Dear Craig...my thoughts have been of you and wishing I had another chance to talk with you. In 1969 you introduced me to music in an amazing manner telling me to "hear every instrument." Ironically, the song we were listening to was Whiter Shade of Pale. My instrument turned out to be my voice...gratefully in 2008 I was finally able to share with you how this impacted my life. My greatest joy is knowing you are with the King, Jesus, and one day I will see you again. I will be singing and possibly playing drums!!

I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the friends and family of Craig Gruber. It is at times like this that we reflect on how short life is and yet there are few words to take away the pain we feel when death strikes. One thought that has provided hope and comfort for me during sad times is a special scripture in the bible at Revelation 21:3,4. It talks about a promise from God where pain, sickness, mourning and death will be no more. I hope this may offer some comfort to you at this difficult time.

"When you lose someone you love, you gain an angel you know."

There were so many good times and laughs along the way. The last 3 years were filled with struggles and a major battle, but you fought the fight with humor, grace, courage and dignity. Your time with us was short, but I am so grateful to have been your friend and helper. Your new road is filled with many blessings and one day, I will see you again.
RIP my fellow Warrior

I've known for quite a while this day was coming. Still there is no preparing for it. From our early days terrorizing Cortland in the 53 Chevy pickup, and blowing out the walls everywhere we played, to the last time I saw you in St. Augustine, I've always felt a special connection with you. Your sense of humor and genuine care for whoever you with make you special. Heaven is a better place with you there. We'll miss you here. I promise I'll take great care of your sis. Bob voyage!

Craig was a very special person. I shared many enjoyable moments with him, Christine, and Graham. While we were of different generations, the gap was not an obstacle. Like many musicians, we do not fully appreciate their talent until they are gone. At least we have the memories and they will last a lifetime. RIP Craig!

Sending all my condolences to the family of Craig. I miss Craig bunches as well. He is in a better place now and rocking the heavens with his brothers again. A place without pain. It was so great working with Craig on the promotions of his former band Eden which he was about to create in 2010. I know it was hard for him losing his sister some while ago too. God bless you rock and god bless your family! AMEN!

Craig was such a great musician that if you didn't know him personally, you'd be missing his greatest attribute...his personality. He was charismatic, charming and funny as hell, and the best "hang" you could find. Having played with Craig in several bands, including The Rods (twice), I can attest to his phenomenol talent on bass guitar. Throughout the past two years he's kept a "brave face" regarding his health. A true friend and fellow musician, but most of all my hero. I can't believe he's gone, and I know I'll never again have a friend like him. R.I.P. Craig! We miss you.

Dear Craig, Thank you for being such a wonderful friend and mentor to me in my formative years as a musician. Your influence on me was and is incalculable. You and Gary gave of yourselves in ways that have left me forever in your debt. Not to mention the fun we had together! Please know that I intend to carry the torch throughout the remainder of my days here. I know we'll meet agin on the other side. Love and respect, Lou

My deepest sympathy to the family of Craig Gruber, please accept my condolence I would like to share with you some comforting scriptures that can really help during this sad, sad time Psalm 56:8 King David says " do put my tears in your skin bottle , then he asked are they not recorded in your book? It shows that God Cares for each and every one of us and he remembers every tears we shed, no matter what is the cause and not only does he care , but he has made provision for every one to have the opportunity to live in a paradise new world, a world where sickness and death will be no more 1 Corinthian 15:26 says God has a yearning to conquer death forever ,remember the words of Jesus and what he did , Jesus cured " every sort of disease and every sort infirmity "Matthew 9:35 so the pain, the grief, and the feeling of helplessness that you are experiencing now won't be remembered after God resurrects Craig back to life with sound body. May these words bring you some comfort.
