Craig Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service on Apr. 11, 2022.
Craig Stewart Smith, 62 of Albion, MI passed away peacefully, April 5th with his wife Martha (Shultz) Smith holding him in her arms at Sparrow Hospital. He was born December 14, 1959 to James and Shirley (Rands) Smith, both deceased.
Besides his wife Martha, Craig is survived by his 3 stepchildren, Alexander, Kathleen and Anderson Thompson. Craig also leaves behind several very close friends and family. Bill and Mary Hill, Kyle Wilder, Rob Leenhouts, Angus and Lisa McTavish, Dawn and Robert Sibal, Shawn and Joe Chrispyn, James Verberg, Howard Tripp, Joe Harris, and Danielle Hudson, whom was like a daughter to Craig. The list goes on endlessly from here.
Craig lived and died by the Code of Honor. He had a passion to help those in need. Whether it was through his love of law, as a Federal Officer, a Jeweler, a Private Investigator or a Fencing Instructor. Craig wore many hats in his careers over his lifetime. But his favorite passions, other than family were his music and his fencing club.
Craig performed with a few bands over the years but loved Celtic Band Celdgh (Kaelee). He embraced his Scottish Heritage strongly and it showed in his performances of several Celtic songs. When not on stage, he often sang to his wife, Martha, as she was his favorite person to sing to. You would often find him singing directly to her when he was on stage.
Craig's other passion was fencing. He formed the Tri-Blade Fencing Academy where he taught Classical Fencing to hundreds of students over the years. Watching his students learn and develop their skills made him smile. But never did he want to see them give up or feel defeated. He taught them that no one is untouchable and Bouts are won, one touch at a time. You could often hear him encouraging a student in a Bout by shouting "Don't stop now, they're not dead yet, keep going, keep stabbing". Along with teaching fencing, he taught Honor. To Craig, Fencing is about honor and never be scare to take on an opponent that is bigger or stronger than you. Though you often heard student respond after coming up against Craig, "That was scary!" As it looked like a game of cat and mouse when he stepped onto a strip.
When not busy working, fencing, or playing music, Craig loved spending time with his family. Family Holidays meant so much to him. He loved traveling, telling bad jokes forever, cooking his wife some amazing French toast creations, or just snuggling up and watching a movie.
Craig will be missed by many. There will be a celebration of Craig's life on Saturday, June 11, 2022 from 2 - 7 pm. at the Isman House in Albion, MI.
