Craig Wilson
September 18, 2025, age 74

Born in Queens, NY, Craig lived in Rochester from the age of 4. He grew up in the neighborhood near Strong Hospital, and graduated from Monroe High School in 1969. Inspired by his father's pivot from a career in advertising to metal sculpting, Craig forged his own path, combining his interest in wildlife with a unique approach to welding steel into a wide range of realistic and whimsical sculptures.

He participated in many shows, and received numerous awards and commissions for his work. He was proud of his membership in the Society of Animal Artists, and of having a piece included in the Wehle collection at the Genesee Country Village and Museum in Mumford.

Craig's creative talents were evident in all areas of his life, from home renovations and landscaping (including his beloved koi pond), to Halloween costumes for his boys. He had a 25-year career as mount- maker and 3D designer in the Exhibits Dept. at the Strong Museum of Play, where many of his creations are still on display. When faced with serious illness, he retired from his day job, and directed his energy once again to metal work and not-your-average birdhouses. Craig was passionate about making things, and found inspiration in everyday objects. He loved his family, his home, his workshop. Facing daily physical challenges for many years kept him mindful of the gift of time-time with his wife, Mary Lou, his children and grandchildren.

He had a gift for friendship and connection, finding someone he recognized almost everywhere he went (including his honeymoon). His spirit, energy, and storytelling will be missed by his large community of friends and family.

Craig is predeceased by his parents, Albert and Doris (Besemer) Wilson, brother Brian, sister Judy (Day), and nephew Brian Michael Wilson. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, sons Tim (Genna) and Peter, granddaughters Lily and Ella, brother Jed (Gail), stepmother Judy Wilson, nieces, nephews and their children.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 12 at 1 PM, at the Irondequoit Public Library, 1290 Titus Ave., Rochester 14617.
