Biography:

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Craig Austin Worthing on January 18, 2026, at the age of 75.

Born in Portland, Maine, Craig grew up in Scarborough and graduated from Scarborough High School in 1968. He later attended the University of Maine at Farmington. He was the eldest child of Grant and Maureen "Bunny" Worthing.

Craig's heart belonged to Maine. He found joy exploring its logging roads, woods, lakes, ocean, and islands whether camping, boating, hiking, hunting, fishing, or cooking outdoors with friends and family. Above all, he cherished his two sons, Erin and Baxter. He was endlessly proud of them; even the mention of their names brought him his biggest smile.

A talented, self-taught chef and baker, Craig worked for many years in restaurants throughout Maine and New Hampshire, and for a time owned a restaurant on Peaks Island where he proudly liked to say he once "served Walter Cronkite." Blending his love of food and the outdoors, he later founded a Gourmet Guide Service, preparing memorable meals right at the campsite.

Craig went on to build a 28-year career at L.L.Bean's Flagship Store in Freeport, starting in the Camping Department and rising to oversee Retail Operations. A devoted believer in L.L.Bean's mission, he cared deeply for his employees and colleagues and also worked with the Outdoor Discovery Schools where he was happily "paid to play," sharing his skills and enthusiasm to help others experience the outdoors.

Craig is survived by his sons, Erin Worthing (Alissa and grandson Foxen) and Baxter Worthing; his siblings, Mark (Rita), Scott (Vicki), and Barry (Laura); as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Craig also leaves behind many dear friends, including his loyal and longtime best friend, Jonathon Ewing as well as Carol, Tom and Wren Warren, whose unconditional friendship and support meant so much, and his former wife and steadfast friend, Sarah Cline.

Craig's warmth, humor, and adventurous spirit made him a friend to many.

In honor of his lifelong love for Maine's woods and waters, contributions may be made in his memory to the Maine Island Trail Association:
