Celebrating a Life of Hard Work, Passion, and Family
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather (granny daddy), and friend to all who knew him. Sonny, as he was known to friends and family, passed away peacefully in his home after a hard-fought and commendable battle with skin cancer. He was 88 years old.
He is survived by his wife Jeannitta Bierlein, son John Bierlein (Jennifer), daughters Debbie Roach and Lucinda Teague, grandsons John Michael Teague, Dylan and Austin Bierlein, Shane Aleman, brother-in-law John Butler, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Eddie and Mary Bierlein, and siblings William "Billy" Bierlein (Donna) and Mary Butler.
Sonny was born in Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC to Charles Edward and Mary Corbin Bierlein. He grew up in Arlington, Virginia and graduated from Washington-Lee High School. Following high school, he provided loyal and faithful military service to the nation through the Department of the Army culminating in an honorable discharge in 1963.
As an accomplished electrician and proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 26, he spent decades lighting up not just buildings but the lives of everyone fortunate enough to cross his path. His commitment to his work was matched only by his loyalty to his family. He believed in the dignity of honest labor and took great pride in mentoring young apprentices, sharing stories, wisdom, and the importance of always doing the job right.
Beyond his professional life, he was a football enthusiast. After playing in high school, he developed a passion for the sport that he continued to nurture by supporting and coaching youth leagues in both Arlington (Bearcats) and Sterling (Lions), Virginia. He also spent over a decade serving as a Board Member for the Lower Loudoun Boys Football League where he served alongside his best friend Gary Kidwell.
In addition to football he was an avid NASCAR fan, hardly ever missing a race (except when his eyes were closed). His knowledge of the sport was encyclopedic, and his animated discussions about who would cross the checkered flag first were interesting. He was not afraid to share his opinion good or bad.
Yet, above all, he was a loving and devoted husband and father. His humor, generosity, and unwavering support will be deeply missed but forever remembered. He taught lessons not just with words, but by example-about the value of hard work, the joy of shared passions, and the importance of standing by those you love.
Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing his legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the memories he created, and the light he brought to all of us. Rest easy, Daddy (Sonny)-you will never be forgotten.
An interment service will be scheduled at a later date.
