Curtis Calhoun

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Curtis Calhoun, who was freed from his earthly chains on November 10, 2023. Born on October 29, 1945, in Willacoochee, GA, to Sarah (Calhoun) Gordon and Simon Calhoun, Curtis lived an exemplary life that embodied the words of Albert Schweitzer, "The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others."
At an early age, Curtis relocated to Miami, FL, where he began his journey into adulthood, working in his cousin's restaurant and completing his education at Booker T Washington High School. His life was a testament to his versatility and resilience, successfully navigating various industries, including hotel, restaurant, and healthcare. However, it was in the sphere of healthcare that Curtis found his true calling, working tirelessly as a Home Health Aide with the Health Management Inc. in Washington, DC. His dedication to his work saw him become an integral member of many families he served, notably Ms. Jean Thomas's family, where he provided loving care for Ms. Thomas for over six years.
Curtis was not just a caregiver by profession, but by nature. He took care of his mother during the latter years of her life, showcasing his unyielding love and devotion to family. Known as the family historian, Curtis kept the family connected and will be remembered for his unwavering dedication and love. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Shirley Rodoson and Deborah Gordon, and brothers, Johnnie Calhoun, Harry Johnson, and Ralph Gordon. He leaves behind his sister, Alma Rodgers, his brother, Carver Johnson, a son he never had, Daniel Allen-Benard, several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and cousins.
As Curtis's life reminds us all - "It's not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving" - Mother Teresa. To Curtis, every life he touched was a gift, and every gift he gave was filled with love. He will be profoundly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives he touched.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 10:00 AM EST at Ronald Taylor II Funeral Home, followed by a homegoing celebration at 11:00 AM EST at the same venue. We invite all who knew and loved Curtis to join us in celebrating his remarkable life.
