Curtis Fitzgerald Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home on Feb. 7, 2025.
Curtis W. Fitzgerald March 23, 1947 – February 4, 2025
Curtis W. Fitzgerald, a proud son of Palestine, Texas, and a hero to many, passed away on February 4, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on March 23, 1947, in Palestine, he remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his life, never forgetting the community that shaped him.
Curtis' remarkable life was marked by a legacy of service, valor, and love. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mona Karen Fitzgerald, who passed away in 2014; mom, Valley Humphrey; and brother, Max Humphrey.
Curtis is survived by his current wife, Sandra Joyce Fitzgerald; his son, Curtis W. Fitzgerald II; daughter-in-law, Stefani Fitzgerald; grandsons, Stone Fitzgerald and Curtis W. Fitzgerald III; and his sister, Sue White.
A standout athlete in his youth, Curtis was part of the 1964 Palestine High School football team that brought home the State championship title. His love for sports remained a cornerstone of his life, and he was integral in bringing youth and high school soccer to Palestine, ensuring that future generations had the opportunity to participate in and enjoy the game.
Curtis' dedication to his community extended beyond the field. A decorated military veteran, he served as a helicopter pilot with the 189th Assault Helicopter Company during the Vietnam War. Curtis achieved the rank of Captain and fought in some of the most intense battles, including the Battle of Hamburger Hill. His bravery earned him numerous awards, including the Silver Star, three Distinguished Flying Cross medals, three Bronze Star medals, 19 Air Medals, and a Purple Heart.
Curtis' dedication to the military did not end with his service. He continued to give back by working closely with the Veterans Administration and various Veterans Service Organizations. He was deeply committed to supporting his fellow veterans and worked extensively with Palestine-area Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) support groups, helping many find strength and healing.
While Curtis' military career and advocacy for veterans are remembered with deep respect, it was his unwavering love for his family, community, and passion for fostering youth sports that left the most lasting impression. He was a man of great integrity, humility, and strength, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A service to honor Curtis' life will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church in Palestine, Texas.
Curtis Fitzgerald will be remembered as a true hero-both on the battlefield and in life, and a champion for the youth of Palestine. In lieu of flowers, and to continue his legacy, donations may be made to https://gofund.me/e9f901e9. This will support Capt. Curtis' passion project of restoration and permanent placement of a Huey Helicopter to honor those who served and sacrificed so much for our country in the Vietnam War.

I worked with Karen and Curtis in Plano Texas.
Both were fun people and hard workers. We sold REO homes from Olney S&L.

Put a lot of hay in the barn for Mr. Horn with Curtis and racked a lot of driveways doing construction projects with him (for his dad) and of course the sports we played right up through the military "great memories!" James T. Henderson

The time I said "He couldn´t catch me, he was too old and slow." He chased me around Granny´s house three times with me screaming right on my butt. He was faster than I thought!
