It is with heavy hearts that we announce Curtis Wayne Harrison, 64, of Norfolk, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 14, 2025, after a long period of declining health. He is preceded in death by his parents, Shirley and Robert Harrison.
Curtis was a graduate of Kempsville High School, where his passion for participating in team sports began as a member of the Varsity Baseball Team. Curtis spent most of his life living in Kempsville, Virginia Beach, surrounded by a community of friends, coworkers, former teammates and family that he deeply cared for and loved spending time with. After graduating from high school, he attended community college briefly before joining his father's business and ultimately launched his own successful construction company. He was particularly an expert in his installation of windows and siding and was known for his attentiveness to every customer's needs.
Curtis is survived by his loving wife, Carol Harrison, and his four children, Lizzie, Zach, Andrew, and Tessa Harrison; his sister, Debbie, and her husband, Robert Billingsley; his brother, Robert Harrison Jr., his wife Colleen McDermott and many nieces and nephews.
Curtis' passion for sports was passed on to his family. He loved going to his children's youth, high school and college sports games and also acted as a coach and advisor to his athlete children. He had special advice during softball/baseball season for tips on batting techniques and how to improve your batting average. Curtis loved watching professional sports and could be found cheering his teams on whenever the Detroit Tigers, Dallas Cowboys and any professional golf tournament was televised. Please note that if you attend his memorial service and celebration of life in any Washington Commanders sports gear, you will be asked to leave, which is what he would like.
He particularly loved the Harrison family tradition of participating in the North American Sand Soccer Championship Tournament at the VA Beach oceanfront every June. Curtis was fiercely competitive and loved golfing, playing pool, cards and just about anything that could be turned into a competition. Curtis also had a great sense of humor and was always making his family laugh with funny sayings and would light up the room with his carefree and joy-generating humor and energy. Even until the very end of his life, he made his family laugh. Curtis had a deep relationship with his family and was a great source of advice about their careers, the latest on how everyone's favorite sports teams were doing and loved catching up with kids with long weekend conversations. One of Curtis' greatest legacies is the strong family culture that he and Carol created in their family with beachfront visits, vacations together, attending sports events and holiday traditions.
Curtis was the recipient of two successful liver transplant donations that extended his life after an inexplicable diagnosis of Hepatitis C when he was in his 30s. He battled this disease while living a full life of family, love and laughter but ultimately succumbed to the negative effects on his body. A special thank you to the neighbors and friends especially Connor, John, and Steve who helped ensure that Curtis' health challenges were made easier through their assistance in his caregiving.
A celebration memorial service of Curtis' life will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025 from 3:30 to 5:30pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5033 Rouse Drive,
Virginia Beach, VA. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects to Curtis from 3:30-5:00pm with a brief funeral service beginning at 5pm. Casual attire is welcome. Immediately following the memorial service, the family invites friends and family to a proper Harrison family celebration at the Harrison home.
As an alternative to flowers, the family requests that donations in Curtis' name can be made to Kempsville High School (please note that the contribution should be made to the Varsity Baseball Team), 5194 Chief Trail, Virginia Beach. VA 23464, or by clicking HERE.
