Curtis James Hurd, born January 4, 1961, to Thelma Louise Hurd and Joseph Leslie Hurd, (whom he preceded in death) in Houston, Texas, Fourth Ward, passed away on February 25, 2026. He grew up in Houston's Fourth Ward, where he developed a deep faith and a love for his family and community. Curtis preceded in death by his great grandmother Alberta Kurkendaul , grandmother Carrie Bell Dorsey, mother Thelma Louise Brown, father Joseph Leslie Hurd , son Curtis James Pillar , Sharon Pillar, aunt Curtis Marie Hogan , uncle Ronald Dorsey , nephew Terry BocanegraCurtis accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior as a child and joined Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon for several years at a young age. He rededicated his life to Christ in 2024 and joined Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church in 2025, faithfully continuing his walk of faith.He attended Gregory Elementary and Lincoln High School, where he formed friendships and memories he carried throughout his life. In October 1987, Curtis was united in marriage to Willie Smith.Curtis is survived by his Aunt Brenda Dorsey , a very special friend, Charlene Jacobs; his siblings, Joseph Hurd (Leatta Hurd), Emmett Hurd ( Elaine Hurd), Tammy Hurd (Rodney Davis), Keith Jones, Bobby Jones his children, Daneall James Pillar, Mishika Burns, and DeAngelo Anderson; his nieces Latasha Warren (Terry Warren), Demonisha Shepherd, Glennetta Derrow, Latoya Derrow; his nephews Joseph Addison, Emmett Shepherd, Quincy Shepherd, Marshall Addison, Marquis Hurd, Jose Hurd, DeMarcus Bocanegra (Teiana), Devonta Bocanegra (Megan); his sister-in-laws Mary Addison, Sandra Shepherd, Mattie Hurd; his brother-in-law Daniel Bocanegra,33 great grand nephews and nieces and a host of other family and friends who he loved dearly. He will be remembered for his generosity, humor, love, and unwavering faith in God. Curtis James Hurd
