Curtis Franklin Thorne, II, 83, of Fairmont passed away on Friday, January 31, 2025, at
Morgantown Heights Nursing Home. Curtis was born May 12, 1941, the son of the late Curtis F.
Thorne and Marguerite (Boggess) Thorne Cox.
Curtis was a beloved figure in the Fairmont community, affectionately known as the "Snakeman"
and "Roadrunner." He had a unique ability to connect with many in the community, never
meeting a stranger. Curtis was well-known for sharing his captivating stories, magic coins, or the
latest bottle he found during his travels around town. In the 1970s, he was often seen with a
friendly snake around his neck, reflecting his love for nature and animals. His daily walks earned
him the nickname "Roadrunner," as he was always on the move, greeting everyone and sharing
his enthusiasm for life. For many years, he provided comfort and fed feral cats on Ogden Ave.
Curtis' journey with autism gave him a unique perspective on the world, one that he embraced
fully and shared generously. His remarkable memory, unwavering honesty, and his resilience in
the face of challenges to create an independent life was truly admirable. Curtis' legacy is one of
creativity, originality, and profound ability to find joy in the little things.
Curtis is survived by his brothers, Travis Thorne (Karen) of Gladwin, MI, and Roger Thorne
(Rosemary) of Oak Ridge, NC. He is survived by his sisters, Maralene Spencer (Craig Martin),
Vivian Hoyt, and Rebecca Diskerud, all of Indianapolis, IN.
In addition to his parents, Curtis is proceeded in death by his father's second wife, Thelma
Thorne; his mother's second husband, John Cox, Sr.; his brothers, Frank Thorne, Ronald
Corley, Charles Cox, John Cox, Jr.; and sisters, Helen Corley, Evelyn Jean Musgrove, and
Helen Valentine.
The family would like to thank the neighbors and staff of Eastview Unity Apartments, especially
Heather Clevenger, Service Coordinator, and his nurse's aide, Phillis Moore, for their years of
dedication and support. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Marion County
Humane Society, P.O. Box 905, Fairmont, WV 26554.
The visitation will be at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, on Thursday,
February 6, 2025, from 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A graveside service will be held Friday, February
7, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Carpenter and Ford is honored to serve The Thorne Family.
