Cynthia Fondriest Obituary

Published by Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home on May 10, 2014.
Cynthia Chmura Fondriest, age 67, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 10, 2014. A native of Detroit, Michigan, Ms. Fondriest graduated from Cass Technical High School and attended Michigan State University. She had a twenty-year career in advertising agencies in both Detroit and Chicago. After the birth of her two daughters, Mary Margaret and Sarah Elizabeth, Ms. Fondriest began a new career in commuter transportation management, first at the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments and, in 1986, joining the City of Alexandria as a Transportation Planner. In 1987, she founded her own consulting business, Strategic Transportation Initiatives, providing transportation management, marketing and strategic planning to corporations, developers and government agencies throughout the United States. A visionary in the field, she opened and operated the first retail Commuter Store in the Washington DC region in 1980, developed the CarrCOMPASS transportation benefits program for the Oliver Carr Company, and pioneered in the application of marketing research to commuter transportation issues. She was an early advocate of employer-based telework programs and most recently was working on the installation of electric car-charging stations. A long-time member of the Association for Commuter Transportation, she served several terms as a member of the ACT Board of Directors, chaired the Association's International Conferences in 1989, 1999 and 2009, and served as President of the Chesapeake Chapter for twelve years. She also was active in the Michigan State University Alumni Association, where she served as Director of Networking for the DC Spartans, affectionately known within the association as "Spartan Cindy." In addition to her daughters Mary Margaret of Craftsbury, Vermont and Sarah Elizabeth (Brian Staton) of Springfield, Virginia and granddaughter Carmela Staton, Ms. Fondriest is survived by two sisters, Carol Castronova (Frank) and Christine Scandirito, nieces, Ellen (Michael) Scandirito, Emily (Chip) Dumitrescu, Andrea (Jamie) Merritt, nephews Frank (Gaye) Castronova, and Anthony (Sarah) Castronova. The family will be receiving visitors at the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Christopher's Church in Springfield on Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Detroit.

To: Sarah, Mary, Brian and Carmela:
A loved ones passing is never easy. She is now free her soul is now at peace and she now has found eternal rest. Keep her memories alive through every day events. Your Mother would have wanted that and expected nothing less. God Bless each of you!

To Sarah, Mary, Brian and Carmela. I count it a blessing in meeting Cynthia. From the very first time we met I could feel her kindness and concern during a sad time in our lives. I will always remember how she spoke so highly of my son Brian and how happy she was that he and her daughter Sarah made a beautiful couple. Sorry we did not have too much time to get to know each other a little better, I am grateful for the time we did. Most of all, I am so happy that she got the opportunity to experience the joy of being a first time grandmother. My cousin Elsie Darden from Pittsburgh PA sends her regards to all of you.

Although I only knew Cynthia for a short time she left a lasting impression. Her love for her family was evident. She was such a help along with Sarah for Brian in the illness of my husband and his father last year.I will remember her kindness and sweet spirit. No more pain, rest in peace.

My sincere condolences go out to my dear Sarah and Mary Margaret. Just a year ago, Cynthia was supporting me in the loss of my father. She selflessly gave her time and heart to me through every endeavor since I have been in Sarah's life. I feel honored to know that she approved of me as a partner in Sarah's life. Her generosity and outgoing spirit has always stood out. Her love for sports and commitment to causes important for her showed a level of dedication that I admire. To the very end, she was a fighter and never gave up hope. In her final moments, she often stated; “I will beat this ALS”. Much to our understanding, "She did". Now she is at peace and no longer suffers. I am proud to know that I have been instrumental in giving her the greatest gift in her final days through the birth of my daughter; her granddaughter Carmela. Through her and through our memories, Cynthia's spirit will live on forever. We will miss her dearly.

Sincerely,
Brian Staton
