Demosthenes John Powers, 92, passed away December 15, 2021, in Pittsburgh, PA. He was more commonly known as John and was born in Zeigler IL in 1929. He was a long-time resident of Churchill and Murrysville PA. He was a very respected and well known insurance industry executive and independent insurance agent. He was the founder and President of Phoenix Credit Corporation, an independent premium insurance finance company.
John was a very involved member of the Greek Community in and around the Pittsburgh area and parishioner of St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Oakland. In addition he was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Diocesan Council for many years.
He was always smiling and pleasant with an ability to savor all of life's moments, great and small. He often recounted these moments to family and friends through his wonderful storytelling, which will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Helene. Devoted father to son John D. (Mary) Powers of Solon OH, daughter Dr. Danae (Dale Lancaster) Powers of State College PA and the late Dr. Alexandros (Peri) Powers of Potomac MD. Cherished grandfather to Alaina (Greg) Peterca, John Powers, Dr. Kristin (fiancé Ryan) Powers, Kreesa Lancaster, Alexandros Lancaster, Alexa Powers, Nick Powers and great grandfather of Zachary Yianni Peterca. He was a loving Uncle, Great Uncle and Cousin to many.
He was predeceased in death by his sister, Sofia and her husband, William Tangalos and his brother Plato Powers.
A private funeral was held Saturday December 18. Remembrances may be made to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 419 S. Dithridge Street Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Arrangements by John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com)
