Margaret Weis Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Margaret Ann (Prendergast) Weis, 96, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2025.

Maggie was born on December 13, 1928 to Irish immigrants Philip and Margaret Prendergast and grew up in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. She married George Weis on November 13, 1954 and they raised four children together in McCandless Township. Husband George died in 2008 and Maggie subsequently moved to Cumberland Woods Village independent living and in 2019 to RoseCrest Assisted Living (Memory Support) in Mars, Pa, where she lived out her days.

Maggie was known for her sense of humor above all else. Even though her speech was a bit garbled toward the end, when she had something funny to say, it came out clear as a bell. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and loved Irish music. She and George were devout Catholics; they were original parishioners of St. Sebastian Parish (now Our Lady of Mt. Carmel) in Ross Township. They loved to travel and especially enjoyed many trips to Italy but also had great times in Vermilion, Ohio and Lake Erie, Pennsylvania. Maggie also visited her many cousins in Ireland on a number of occasions.

For 50 years, Maggie worked on fundraisers for the Pittsburgh Symphony, and had a lot of fun attending the events with her many friends, especially the late Bea Joyce and Ruth McKenna. While she would be the first to admit she was not a singer, she sang for funerals in St. Sebastian's Resurrection Choir because they "needed the bodies for a proper send-off."

She is survived by her four children: George Jr. (Donna LaBenne) of Ridgway, PA, Sheila (Gene Scanlon) of St. Simons Island, GA, Eileen (Mike Aire) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Laura (Thomas Synnott) of Wexford, PA. She also leaves her grandchildren Marina Weis-Haggerty (Ryan), Morgan Aire (Carson Matthews), Andrew Aire, Maggie Scanlon, Hannah Synnott and one great granddaughter, Evie Haggerty. She was predeceased by her infant grandson Garrity Eugene Scanlon, as well as her memorable siblings: Jack, Tom and Charles (Bud) Prendergast, Mary Burgoon and Teresa Weis.

Maggie's family will be forever grateful to every person who came to RoseCrest to work, volunteer, feed and entertain the residents since she lived there. It was the best place for Maggie and she enjoyed being involved in all of the activities (except Bingo).

Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Saturday September 13, 2025, from 10 – 11 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Sebastian's Church, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, Ross Twp. at 12 Noon. Remembrances in Maggie's honor may be made to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
