Daisy Mae Sweatt (McGruder), lovingly called “Nan”, was born on November 11, 1956, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late David and Mattie Stallings formerly of Harlan, Kentucky. She passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.
Alongside her parents, Daisy was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Lindsay Sweatt and her loving niece, Constance McLemore. Daisy attended Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, where she majored in education.
She was the most loving and devoted mother to her two children, son, Steven (Meagan) Sweatt of Gadsen, Alabama and her daughter, Ashley (Demico) Sweatt- Johnson of Rome, Georgia. She was a loving Nan to her pride and joy grandchildren, Emory Sweatt, Kamryn Richey, Maddox Sweatt, and Hendrix Sweatt; sisters, Angelia (Leslie) Lee of Harlan, Kentucky, Gloria- Jean (Jesse) McLemore of Birmingham, Alabama, Shirley- Ann of Birmingham, Alabama; brothers, Henry and Gregory McGruder both of Harlan, Kentucky; her bonus children, India Pritchett and Alex Mann, plus an abundance of others; her dear sisters and best friends, Angelia Lee, Angela Clark, Donna Fox, and Ophelia Durham; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Daisy was a member of Riverview Baptist Church, where she volunteered her gentle and caring heart to the nursery. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with family but most of all her grandchildren. She had an immense love for beach trips, spur of the moment outings, trips to the mountains, music, cooking, gardening, and tending to her rose bushes.
Near and dear to many, Daisy was always willing to be there in a time of need offering her support, wisdom, and love in abundance. May her sweet memory be a blessing to all who knew her, and may we carry forth her legacy of love and compassion.
The Sweatt family would like to express gratitude to everyone who has sent love and prayers during this difficult time.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home. The Sweatt family will receive friends and family on Sunday, following the service until 4:00 PM at the funeral home.
