Dale Breckel Obituary

Dale Breckel
August 15, 1942 - September 25, 2022
Breese, Illinois - Dale E. Breckel, 80, of Breese, IL, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2022, at home with his family by his side.
He was born August 15, 1942, to Edward and Catherine "Kay" (nee O'Donnell) Breckel in Chicago, IL. On April 2, 1977, he married Helen "Carol" Comstock, at St. John UCC in Mascoutah, IL.
He lived in the Lebanon area for 17 years before moving to Kentucky for eight years. He and Carol then came back to Illinois, making a home in Breese.
During their time in Lebanon, Dale was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Dale had earned his Masters' Degree and taught Social Sciences at Mascoutah High School from 1967 to 1993; a member of the Teacher's Union in Mascoutah. After retirement, he worked there as a substitute teacher for another 10 years. He was the head wrestling coach, head baseball coach, and the assistant football coach at Mascoutah High School.
Dale was a lifelong Cubs fan, and always enjoyed watching his kids and grandkids play sports. He liked to fish, camp, and was an avid birdwatcher, with white pelicans being his favorite. Dale loved decorating for the Holidays, making Halloween and Christmas decorations; even winning the Tiny Tim Category one year in the Breese Holiday Lighting contest. He also loved to make water fountains as well. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, when she was able, with Alaska being his favorite destination. Dale enjoyed surfing the internet and passing on good deals. Always wanting to learn new things, he would look up any topic he found interesting on the internet until he figured it out. A loving, family man, Dale spent the last few years taking care of his wife.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Breckel; son, Jeffery Beckel; parents, Ed and Kay Breckel; sister, Margie Seifert; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Marvin and Georgia Comstock; step mother-in-law, Vera Comstock; sister-in-law, Barbara "Bobby" Klingel.
Dale is survived by his children, Leann (Linus) Wilke, Jay (Amy) Breckel, Gary (Cari) Breckel; daughter-in-law, Vicki Breckel; grandchildren, Mitchell Wilke, Meredith Wilke, Anderson Wilke, Joshua Breckel, Emma Breckel, Lance Breckel, Livia Breckel, Carly Breckel, Jack Breckel, Sam Breckel; siblings, Mike (Rita) Breckel, Joyce Carlson; brothers-in-law, Richard Seifert, Darrell (Shirley) Comstock, Warren Klingel; special cousin, Marilyn Woitel; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dale was a gifted teacher, who had a great way of encouraging and uplifting his students. He taught me political science in 1976, and I had the privilege of attending his wedding with my then boyfriend, now husband, Carl Fred Mueller. I am grateful that I had the chance to see him again at a family event a few years back, and to tell him what an impact he made on me as a young student. Rest in peace Dale.

Mr. Breckel was my social science teacher in high school. He was such a smart man and I enjoyed him and his class very much.

Mr. Breckel was my favorite teacher in all of my education. He was provocative & fair. He had great stories that brought history & social sciences to life. In a time when `boys´ were treated differently than `girls´, the Coach treated us all the same. He encouraged me to be curious and to keep learning - best teacher, ever!
