Dale Stase Skeberdyte Meckauskas
Dale, 92, died May 22, 2023 in
Lemont, IL. She was born May 8, 1931 in Kaunas, Lithuania and lived there until 1941 when her family was able to move from war-torn occupied Lithuania to Germany. They tried to escape to the west in 1945 after Dresden was bombed, but Soviet troops blocked their way. In fear of destruction, they returned to Lithuania on foot.
In 1959, Dale completed a degree in economics and organization from the Kaunas Agriculture Academy. The family's German citizenship allowed them to escape Communist Lithuania by emigrating to Germany. However, the two oldest sisters who were twins stayed behind in Lithuania.
While visiting the USA in the early 1960's, she met Tadas Meckauskas whom she married in 1964 in
Calumet City, IL. They lived in
Lansing, IL for many years. While in the Chicago, she sang with the Lithuanian Opera choir and was active with Tadas in the American Lithuanian Union, East Chicago Chapter. After Tadas died in 2002, Dale moved closer to her son in Indianapolis, IN.
Surviving her are son Rimantas (Ray), daughter-in-law Tracy, grandchildren Erika, William, and Emily; sister Lile (still in Lithuania), two cousins, three nieces, and one nephew.
Visitation will be Monday, June 19th at 9:00 AM, at the Lithuanian World Center chapel, 14911 127th St.,
Lemont, IL 60439. Followed by mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at the Lithuanian National Cemetery, 8201 South Kean Ave., Justice, IL 60458.
