Dan Funk Obituary

Dan was a U.S. Army veteran. He was the owner and operator of Funk's Carpet Showroom in Mt. Vernon from 1972 until a few years ago when he semi-retired. He would stay busy on side projects with his friend, Steve Fuelling and enjoyed traveling with the love of his life, Janice Woods. Time with family was always important to him and he would be the one to organize large get-togethers. Dan enjoyed flying ultra-lights in his younger years and shared a passion for aviation with his close friend, Duane Daws. He was always up for a long motorcycle adventure with his cousin, Glen and close friends, Bret Moye and Steve Fuelling. He was a member of Western Hills Country Club, Elks Lodge #277, Eagles #1717 and the American Legion Post #5.
You simply cannot sum up in a few sentences how full of a life he had and the people he shared it with. Most of all, we should remember him as a Vietnam veteran, father, grandfather, loyal friend and someone you could lean on in times of crisis. He always had a silly joke to tell and was happy to see you.
He is survived by his sons, Derek and Brandon Funk; partner, Janice; stepchildren, Chris Kelly, Amanda (Kelly) Certain and Sarah (Kelly) Rush; grandchildren, Damon and Jonah Funk, Myah Woodruff and Serenity Funk; sisters, Donna (Funk) Mars (Gary), Paula Jo Funk; brothers, Tim Funk, John Funk (Cindy); nephews and nieces, Curt Johnson (Bonnie), Matt Semelka (Sherry), Abby Comiskey, Jennifer Williams, Ciara Bailey, Kathy Henderson, Richard Henderson, Holly Doty, Mary Doty, Miranda (Funk) Garrett, Carrissa (Funk) Wojciechowski and Rachel Funk (Caden and Michael); along with many other family members.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main St., Mt. Vernon, IN with Rev. Dallas Robinson officiating and burial to follow in Mount Church Cemetery in Casey, IL. Military rites provided by Casey VFW and Martinsville American Legion.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.

I didn't know till now that Dan died. I am so saddened. He was a wonderful person. He always greeted me with such warmth and humor. I was an ex military nurse and we would talk about the service. He always did all our floors and carpeting and he was a man you could always trust to do an excellent job. My sympathy to all his family and close friends.

I was blessed to have known this man, share a chapter of his life with many wonderful memories. He helped me raise three wonderful children which I will be forever grateful for.
He had so many passions. Flying, golfing, motorcycle riding.. mostly working with his hands. He took an old barn and turned it into a beautiful home with beams & balconies. Made the cover of Sunday Edition of Courier & Press. He took an old RV and restored it into a beautiful unique motorhome that was truly one of a kind. Riding on his yellow ultralight, sitting on his tool pouch like Mary Poppins. Oh the things we do when we are young. Exotic vacations, always looking for adventures. Ixtapa with his Cousin. Snorkeling with sting rays in the Caymens. Sunsets in Cabo San Lucas. Skiing with friends in Steamboat. So many fond memories, I will never forget. You will always be in my heart. Rest in Peace my friend.
