Dan Mahon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2025.
Dan Dunbar Mahon passed away on August 15, 2025, in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Dan was born on March 6, 1956, to Dorothy (Dunbar) and Francis Mahon in Des Moines, Iowa. He grew up in Des Moines, Iowa and Guymon, Oklahoma. Dan served in the Navy before starting his career as an Environmental Engineer in Colorado holding many professional certifications. He could fix anything-cars, ovens, ACs, and commercial restaurant and dry-cleaning equipment. He taught his nieces and nephews how to maintain a car, change the oil, and re-wire a fuse box. For the past 30 years, his expertise was shown while maintaining equipment at the Cleaner Express and the Hickory House in Aspen, Colorado.

Dan was very involved politically, always staying current on world events. He enjoyed many hours of discussion on these topics with his friends and family. Dan loved cooking and entertaining. He made everyone feel welcome and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Dan especially loved treating friends and family to various local activities and music festivals, creating lasting memories. Dan and his beloved dog, Cookie, were often seen in Aspen and Glenwood Springs since they were inseparable.

Dan is preceded in death by his mother, father, and brothers-Burdette and Richard Mahon. Dan is survived by his sisters, Kathleen Lowman and Frances Sargent, nieces, nephews, and many close friends, including Robert Raymond and Tong Luu. A celebration of life will be held at a later time. His laugh, smile, kindness, knowledge, and generosity will be missed.

Frannie and Kathleen, sending love and hugs to you and your family as you mourn the loss of your brother. Dan, or Cousin Danny as I always referred to him, had a bit of mischief in him, but also a heart of gold. He came to Albia in 1999 when we were dispersing my dad`s ashes at the Big Rock, and he shared words of comfort for our family as well as kind words about Dad. The last time I saw him was at your dad`s memorial service in Guymon in 2004. He always invited me to visit in Aspen, but I never quite got there. May he rest in peace.

I will always remember Dan sitting down and watching classic cartoons with me growing up. Telling me about roadrunners and coyotes. Also warning me not to run with pencils or scissors because that is how he lost his eye. The story always changed a little as I grew up but those stuck with me. Rest in peace Uncle Dan. Thank you for sharing what you knew.
