CEDAR RAPIDS-Daniel Joseph Ales, 89, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2022. The family will host a rosary at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 10, with visitation following from 2 – 4 p.m. at St. John XXIII Church, 8100 Roncalli Drive SW, Cedar Rapids. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday, July 11, at the church with a visitation one hour prior. Graveside services with military honors at 5 p.m. Monday, July 11, at St. Mary's Cemetery in Muscatine. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service assisted the family.
Dan was born March 4, 1933, in Muscatine, Iowa, son of Edward and Anna (Vogl) Ales. Dan married Shirley Woltmann on June 17, 1953. He was a Korean War veteran. Dan was the owner of Dan De Donuts and Restaurant in Muscatine. He was a member of St. John XXIII, The Elks, Moose, VFW, and past president of the Iowa Restaurant Association. Dan enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling with Shirley. A fond memory was his Eastern Iowa Honor Flight with his son. He loved time spent with family and was famously known by everyone for his donuts, milkshakes, and candy. Dan will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; children, Sheryl (Bob) Walker of Austin, Texas, Susan (Joe) Ales-Clow of Girard, Kansas, Paul (Tammy) Ales of Muscatine, and Sharon (David) Langenberg of Fairfax, Iowa; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and brother, David Ales of Muscatine.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Anna Ales; sister, Denise Heinrichs, her husband Vince; sister-in-law, Janet Ales; and nephew, David Heinrichs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Mercy and staff at Stoney Point Meadows for their compassionate care.
