Danny and I, both Richmond, CA natives, met at El Cerrito HS, where we were both student leaders and athletes. I was a member of a YMCA club, the 49ers, exclusively white males. I encouraged Danny to apply for membership (1962) as he was a special person, upbeat with a nonstop smile, one of those people who had it'. He was the first Black member of the 49ers, a small step toward a more equitable school environment. Fast forward fifty years and I ran into an article about Dan in the Oregonian, about his tenure as President of Portland State University. We happily caught up via email as Richmond natives and El Cerrito HS Gauchos'. His death came as a shock, his obit as a wonderfully accomplished human being, confirmation of who he was as a young kid. Rest In Peace, Danny.

My wife and I were friends of Dan, and we were shocked and dismayed to learn of his death. He was a fine man and we will miss him.

My friendship with Dan was the kind where we wouldn't speak with one another for a time (we always promised to get together for golf), but when we finally did, it was like no time had passed. We saw him last when he came up to NYC one Sunday to have brunch with me and my wife at a little French restaurant in Chelsea. It isn't often that you meet someone who you don't see very often, yet pick right up where you left off with a warm and friendly relationship.

Dan and I met at a NAACP Legal Defense Fund golf tournament over 20 years ago, and became fast friends. We found out that not only were we from the same area of California - Richmond (Dan) and Oakland (me), but born within days of one another in the same year. I also at one time owned a 1966 gold Oldsmobile Tornado like the one Dan drove.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his daughter Qunicey, and son Justin.

Very sad to hear. My wife and I you used to meet Dan for dinner often and he was a wonderful person to speak with. My condolences and best wishes to his family - seems like I just saw him the other day in his Thunderbird...

A modest obit is very appropriate for such an exceptional human being. While Dan accomplished much and touched many, he never choose to celebrate himself. It was this essential humility and his warm regard for others that will be my lasting impressions of a man to whom I will always be indebted.

There should have been more time, but the time there was will forever be remembered with love.
