Dr. Daniel James Booser passed away on Monday, December 9, 2024, at his home in
Houston, Texas. He was 82. The cause was complications of pharyngeal cancer.
Born on December 12, 1941, in Middletown, Pennsylvania, to James and Edith Booser, Daniel graduated from Swarthmore College and earned his medical degree at Yale School of Medicine. He completed internal medicine training at Pittsburgh Presbyterian University Hospital and pursued specialized oncology training at Toronto General Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital in Canada.
He spent a transformative year serving in the U.S. Navy as a physician in Saigon, Vietnam, as a medical adviser to the Vietnamese Naval hospital. His time there ignited his lifelong interest in languages, culture, and food, especially Vietnamese food.
During the 1980s, Daniel worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he established medical oncology as a specialty at King Faisal Hospital. It was there, in 1983, that he met his future wife, Helene. The two married in 1985 and shared four decades.
A distinguished breast medical oncologist passionate about patient care, he was beloved by his many patients and well-respected by his colleagues. He dedicated 36 years of his career to MD Anderson, conducting an estimated 100,000 outpatient visits with patients from all over the world, often in Arabic and Spanish.
A patron of the Houston Symphony and Houston Opera, he deeply loved music, art, and history, with a particular fascination for 15th-century Flemish paintings. He was also an avid collector of carpets, a passion inspired by his time in the Middle East. He loved to travel and visited around 60 countries.
The family thanks Dr. Chambers, Dr. Ferrarotto, Dr. Rosenthal, and the MD Anderson staff for their expert care and compassion during his illnessadditional thanks to Dr. Joseph Kong, Lourdes Kong, and Janine Bassano for their unwavering support.
