Daniel Cahill Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Daniel Cahill, beloved son and brother, treasured uncle and great-uncle, and friend to all who knew him, who left us unexpectedly on January 27, 2025, at the age of 67.

A celebration of Dan's life will be held on April 5, 2025 at St. Patrick's Church in LaSalle at 10:30 AM with the Very Rev. Thomas Otto. Before Mass begins, Dan's family will greet well-wishers in the church from 10:00 AM until time of services. The Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle has been entrusted with his arrangements.

Dan is the son of James and Ellen Conway Cahill of LaSalle. Dan attended St. Patrick's Grade School where, alongside his twin brother John, served as altar boys for Sunday Masses all through elementary school and most of high school. He believed this made up for the massive amounts of mischief he and John would incur during the week. Dan loved all sports and, depending on the season, always had a ready team of his brothers for baseball, basketball, football, or hockey. He excelled at every sport he tried.

Dan graduated from L-P and attended IVCC. He joined the Teamsters in his early career, working for Butternut. For the last 25 years, he worked in local industry, happy to have a job and co-workers he respected. His true passion, however, was bowling. He achieved local, state and national recognition as an athlete in that sport. He and his brother John traveled extensively – often around bowling tournaments – and in doing so made many lifelong friendships. He was a proud member of the Ladd Lanes All Star Team. He received numerous awards and trophies throughout his lifetime, including being inducted in the Men's Bowling Hall of Fame.

He loved spending time with his family in the Illinois Valley, southern California and Connecticut, and wherever and whenever they gathered to celebrate, he came. His motto was "With family, I suit up and show up." He never missed a Notre Dame game, the result of early indoctrination from his father James, himself a graduate of the Fighting Irish. Equally, Dan was a huge fan of the Chicago Bears, and despite major flak from some of his siblings, remained a dedicated lifelong White Sox fan.

Dan was a cherished member of the Cahill family. He was humble, sensitive, and shy and appreciated the simple things in life – a good cup of coffee, some Illinois Valley pork sandwiches, checking in with everyone, and just 'chilling out'. Dan was taught to be honest and kind, and he was, his entire life. He expected everyone else would be the same.

Dan is survived by his family including brothers Peter (Kim Shute) of Owensboro KY; Timothy of Palm Springs CA; Andrew (Tanya Schmidt) of Yucaipa CA; sisters Kate (Brian Barger) of Palm Springs; Bridget of Palm Springs; and Abigail (Joshua Kagan) of Ridgefield CT. In addition, Dan is survived by his nephews Justin (Hannah Kirkland) of Chicago; Adam (Bree Tropp) of Mesa AZ; Riley of Yucaipa CA; Caden of Beaumont CA; Benjamin Kagan of Chicago; Reid Kagan of Chicago; and niece Ella Rose Kagan of Ann Arbor MI. He leaves his much-loved grandnephews and nieces Finnegan, Declan, Ava Joy, Nolan, Kayli, Colin and Camden. We are all better people for having had Dan in our lives.

Here on earth, we imagine Dan in heaven hugging it out with his A -Team: his twin brother John, parents James and Ellen Cahill, Grandfather Phillip Conway, beloved Aunt Sr. Rose Conway, and countless generations of Conway-Cahill's who supported his journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates a gift made in Dans name to the Voluntary Action Center of LaSalle, who provided Dan some great Meals on Wheels, and where Dan planned to volunteer as soon as he retired. https://vacdk.networkforgood.com/projects/242895-2024-lasalle-putnam-and-bureau-county

While we mourn his loss, we are comforted by the memories we shared and the lasting impact he had on our lives.

Dan and John and I started school together in Sister Ignatia's class. Such a long time ago. Always the nicest guys. Always ready to hit a ball or go adventuring down along the Tow Path. Our class and those times together were the foundation of our lives.
